TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team hits the road Monday for the first of five away games, taking on Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia.
Monday's game is set to tip at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+ with audio and live stats on SJUHawks.com.
The Series: Saint Joseph's leads (4-1)
Towson and SJU have met five total times, last winter at SECU Arena where the Tigers took their first win of the series 90-66. Before the 2017 Tiger win the Hawks had won the first four meetings, dating back to the first matchup in the 1980's. Last December, Towson had four players score in double digits to take the win, including
Nukiya Mayo who scored 13.
Danielle Durjan,
Jalynn Holmes and
Maia Lee also faced Saint Joseph's last year, scoring a combined 17 points. The Tigers out-scored the Hawks in three quarters, with a 20-23 difference in the third period. Towson scored 18 points off 13 turnovers and had 19 second chance points to help edge out the road team.
Last Time Out
The Tigers are coming off a bounce-back win over Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday morning, 62-57.
Nukiya Mayo led the way with 15 points while redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter scored 13. Towson held the lead over the local Greyhounds throughout the game following the first four minutes, with the closest opportunity for the road team coming in the last 90 seconds. Loyola came within three points of tying it up but was held off by free throws by both Mayo and Jeter.
Scouting the Tigers
Tuesday's win over the Greyhounds put the Tigers at an even 4-4 after losing to No. 12 Syracuse last Sunday.
Kionna Jeter remains the team's leading scorer, averaging 21.5 points per game, as she ranks 15th in the nation in scoring.
Nukiya Mayo continues to be a contributor to the Towson offense and defense, scoring 11 points per game and averaging six rebounds per game. The Tigers have a total 146 offensive rebounds so far this season, averaging 18 per game, ranking the team ninth in the nation.
Scouting the Hawks
Saint Joseph's enters the contest with a 3-6 record, most recently falling to Auburn on Thursday. The Hawks fell to Drexel in their second game of the year, and have defeated Loyola, both common opponents with the Tigers. Leading the SJU offense is Alyssa Monaghan, averaging 13.0 points per game. Katie Mayock is leading the team in rebounds, averaging 5.8 per game, while Monaghan is running the floor with 36 total assists, or four per game. The Hawks as a team are averaging 52.8 points per game, shooting 35.1 percent from the field.
All the A10 Opponents
Towson's conference play is within view, beginning on Friday, Jan. 4, but the nonconference schedule has four games against members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Tigers have faced George Washington, UMass and La Salle already, taking wins against the Minutewomen and the Explorers. Ironically enough, the Hawks are facing three members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in Towson, Drexel and Delaware, the latter an upcoming game. The CAA overall holds the advantage between the two conferences this year, with a 12-4 record currently.
The Road Ahead
No, the Towson women's basketball team will not remain technically away from campus until January 11, but the team does have five road games on the horizon. After the Tigers face Saint Joseph's they will have a break for finals before traveling to face West Virginia and Marshall to round out the nonconference schedule. After the winter break Towson will open CAA action at Drexel and Delaware.
