Towson, Md. – The Towson University baseball dropped the series opener to Marist, 9-1, Friday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
How it Happened
- Marist (2-10) took advantage of a pair of Tiger errors in the first inning to score two runs.
- After cruising through the second, Towson starter Gavin Weyman ran into trouble in the third inning. A walk and a double put runners on second and third with no outs.
- Weyman took matters into his own hands the rest of the inning as he struck out the next three hitters to get out of the inning without any damage.
- A leadoff double in the fourth would score on a groundout and a wild pitch allowed another leadoff double to score in the fifth to extend the advantage to 4-0.
- Weyman would close out his outing by adding two striking out two more hitters. He was saddled with the loss despite going a career-long six innings and striking out a career-high eight.
- The Red Foxes would extend their lead with a run in the seventh and four runs in the eighth inning.
- Towson (3-13) finally got on the board in the ninth inning as Mark Grunberg double to the base of the fence in left field and scored on a Logan Burke single through the left side.
- Grunberg's double in the ninth extended his hit streak to six games.
- Richie Palacios singled in the first inning and has now reached safely in 20-straight game dating back to last season.
- Tony Romanelli (1-2) allowed just three hits and struck out six over six scoreless innings to pick up the victory.
