TOWSON, Md. – Towson University left hander Davie Marriggi struck out a career-high nine hitters over 6.1 innings, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell, 4-1, to Marist Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
How it Happened
- Marriggi struck out at least one hitter in six of the seven innings he appeared. The nine strikeouts betters his career high of seven that he had set two times prior.
- The Red Foxes (3-10) got on the board in the second inning after Nick Cantone doubled just inside the bag at third to score a run. Marriggi would make sure that no other runs scored as he struck out each of the next two hitters.
- Marriggi came back to fan two more hitters in the third inning before getting the final two outs of the fourth on strikeouts looking.
- The Tigers (3-14) got their lone run of the game in the fifth as Andrew Cassard drew a bases-loaded walk. Towson nearly took the lead on a Richie Palacios hit to the left side, but the third baseman made a diving stop and threw the runner out at second.
- Marist used the momentum of that play to get a two-run home run from Frankie Gregoire in the seventh inning for the game-winning runs.
- Towson tried to answer back in the home-half of the frame as singles from Colin Gimblet, Mark Grunberg and Richard Miller loaded the bases. A groundout ended the threat and the Tigers left the bases loaded for the second-straight inning.
- Marriggi's day would come to an end after allowing an unearned run in the seventh. He allowed seven hits over his 6.1 innings.
- Jake Pecilunas came out of the bullpen and was able to retire the two hitters he faced to get out of the inning.
- Alex Cuas pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.
- Grunberg singled in the sixth inning to extend his hit streak to seven games.
- Charlie Jerla (1-3) allowed one run on five hits and four walks over 6.0 innings to pick up the victory.
- Mike Coss (1) retired all three hitters he faced to earn the save.
