GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fueled by
Kendyl Scott's fourth three-hit game of the season and
Julia Smith-Harrington's second shutout, the Towson University softball team accomplished something special with its 11-0 victory over Canisius in the Spartan Classic Saturday morning.
In addition to extending its school-record winning streak to 13 games, Towson raised its overall mark to 19-3, which is the best start in program history.
The record start and winning streak may not mean much presently because there's still 34 regular season games remaining. However, years from now when players gather for reunions or scroll through social media, they'll appreciate and understand the significance of doing something that no other Towson softball team has ever done.
Senior
Brook Miko also became Towson's all-time leader in runs batted in following her 28th career home run, which was hit in the first inning. She has 142 career RBIs, which surpassed Sammie DiPompo, who graduated in 2011 with 140.
Quotable
Miko on becoming Towson's all-time RBI leader.
"I had no idea that was a thing, but it's pretty awesome. It's just me doing my job when I am up to bat and there's runners on base. This is a team accomplishment because without them getting on base, I wouldn't have the opportunity to drive in runs. I have to get a ball through or to the outfield to score somebody. That's my job. I guess it's paid off in my four years so that's pretty cool."
Miko on Towson's best start in program history and winning streak.
"We're all on the same page on offense and defense. Everybody is doing their job on and off the field. We're all having fun and we like to be on the field and play. We like to hit the ball. (The winning) is nice, but we're having fun and that's what means the most to us right now."
