Big Inning Hurts Tigers in Series Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team could not avoid the big inning Friday as Hofstra scored seven runs in the fifth inning in a 11-0 victory in the series opener at Schuerholz Park.

How it Happened
  • The Pride (12-6, 2-2 CAA) scored an unearned run in the fourth inning as a runner scored from second when a line drive was mishandled.
  • Hofstra started the fifth with four-straight hits to score three runs. They then took advantage of six walks and got a home run from Teddy Cillis in pushing across seven runs in the frame.
  • That was more than enough for the Pride starting pitcher John Rooney (4-0) as he allowed just two hits and struck out nine over seven shutout innings.
  • Towson starter Gavin Weyman matched Rooney early as Weyman did not allow a hit through the first four innings. He finished the day by allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits over four-plus innings.
  • The Pride would add a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth for the final margin.
  • Andrew Cassard came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a pair of singles up the middle.
  • Matt Watters was the most effective reliever out of the bullpen as he allowed just one hit and struck out three over 1.2 innings.
