No. 10 Tigers Edged by No. 16 Loyola in Third Overtime

BALTIMORE, Md. - Taylor VanThof scored her fourth goal of the game with 4:15 remaining in the third overtime to lead No. 16 Loyola Maryland to a 14-13 victory over the 10th-ranked Towson University women's lacrosse team Wednesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.

The Tigers (3-1) held a 35-29 advantage in shots and a 27-13 margin in ground balls, but were outscored 9-2 after Loyola freshman goalie Kaitlyn Larsson entered the game totaled 12 saves over the final 43:45. The Greyhounds also won 12 of the game's final 16 draw controls.

How it Happened
  • Led by two goals from senior Emily Gillingham, Towson scored four goals in the first 7:21 to take a 4-1 lead.
  • Loyola (2-2) answered with back-to-back tallies from Sam Fielder and Livy Rosenzweig to pull within one, 4-3, with 19:54 remaining in the first half.
  • Highlighted by four different goal scorers, the Tigers responded by scoring the game's next four goals to push their lead to five.
  • During the run, sophomore Annie Sachs picked up her first career assist on a pass to freshman Kaitlin Thornton with 12:39 left in the opening half.
  • The two teams would exchange goals over the next few minutes with senior Kaitlyn Montalbano netting her third of the half with 5:18 to play.
  • Goals by Sachs and red-shirt senior Gabby Cha in the final two minutes gave Towson its largest lead of the game at six going into halftime, 11-5.
  • The Greyhounds struck twice in the first four minutes of the second half to pull within four, 11-7.
  • Goals from Gillingham and junior Carly Tellekamp pushed Towson's lead back to five at 13-8.
  • However, Gillingham's goal with 21:17 remaining in the second half would be the last for the Tigers as they were held scoreless for the final 34:02.
  • Loyola scored the game's last six goals, tying it as 13-13 with just 58 seconds remaining before VanThof won it 45 seconds into the third overtime.
Inside the Numbers
  • It was the first triple overtime game for the Tigers since Mar. 4, 2006 when they beat George Washington at home, 9-8.
  • Towson is 10-5 in overtime games under eighth-year head coach Sonia LaMonica.
  • The Tigers' 11 first-half goals matched a season-high. They also scored 11 in the first half against Penn State and the second half versus Georgetown.
  • Junior Natalie Sulmonte picked up two assists in the first half to extend her scoring streak to 35 consecutive games.
  • With three first-half goals, Montalbano posted her 17th career game with at least three goals.
  • Gillingham scored at least three goals for the second-straight game and for the 10th time in her career.
  • Gillingham and Tellekamp each extended their goal scoring streak to 12 games.
  • Senior Tianna Wallpher totaled a career-high five caused turnovers to go along with three ground balls.
  • In addition to her three goals, Montalbano added a career-high five ground balls.

  • The game featured 79 fouls, four yellow cards, two green cards and one red card.
  • Loyola scored six of its 14 goals off free positions as it was 6-for-13, including 4-for-7 in the second half.
  • The Greyhounds also scored on four of five extra-man opportunities.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers return to Unitas Stadium for the fourth time in five games this season when they host a nonconference contest with Coastal Carolina Saturday beginning at noon.
  • Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
