TOWSON, Md. – Towson University second baseman
Dirk Masters drove in two runs in the Tigers 5-2 loss to Ohio Friday afternoon in the series opener at Schuerholz Park.
How it Happened
- The Tigers (2-9) struck first as Charlie Watters singled to right field and went to second as Noah Cabrera was hit by a pitch. Masters followed with a hard-hit ball into left center for the early 1-0 advantage.
- Towson starter Gavin Weyman ran into some trouble in the second and third innings as the Bobcats put runners in scoring position with less than two outs. In both cases, Weyman was able to get out of the inning without any damage.
- Ohio (7-6) finally got on the board in the fifth inning as three-straight hits plated a run. A sacrifice fly scored the second run of the inning before a single to center made it a 3-1 ball game.
- The Bobcats would extend the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
- The Tigers finally got on the board again in the eighth inning as back-to-back walks from Watters and Trey Martinez put two on with one out. A groundout advanced both runners and Masters came through again with another RBI single to left field.
- Towson was not without chances during the game as they stranded at least one base runner in eight of the nine innings. The two teams combined to strand 26 base runners.
- Weyman (0-3) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings.
- Gerry Salisbury (2-2) allowed one run on four hits over five innings to pick up the victory.
- Jake Roehn (4) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
- Masters finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.
- Andrew Cassard added two hits, while Watters scored both runs.
