TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University baseball team got a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning from
Richard Miller, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell, 10-9, to Ohio University Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
How it Happened
- The Tigers (2-10) entered the ninth inning down by four runs. With one out, Andrew Cassard walked and Richie Palacios singled up the middle.
- With runners on the corners, Mark Grunberg hit a ground ball to the right side to score Cassard.
- After falling behind 0-2, Miller hit the next pitch he saw over the fence in right field for a two-run shot, his second of the season.
- Unfortunately, the Tigers were not able to get any closer as Jake Roehn retired the only hitter he faced to earn his fifth save of the season.
- The home run was just part of a big day for Miller who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.
- Miller helped get the Tigers on the board in the second inning as he hit an opposite field double and later scored on an error off the bat of Trey Martinez.
- Ohio (8-6) took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, only to have the Tigers tie it up in the home half.
- Miller again helped ignite the rally as he doubled to left center and scored when Charlie Watters single to center field.
- A Billy Lennox single was followed by a two-out single up the middle from Noah Cabrera to score Watters.
- The Bobcats quickly responded with a big inning in the fifth as each of the first four hitters collected base hits in route to scoring four runs in the frame.
- Towson got one of the runs back in the home-half of the inning after Palacios walked and stole second. He moved to third on a Grunberg single to right and scored on Miller's sacrifice bunt.
- Ohio would push its lead to 10-4 heading to the seventh before the top of the lineup got the Tigers going. Back-to-back singles from Cassard and Palacios, and a wild pitch put two runners on second and third. Grunberg plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to left center, and Palacios scored on a wild pitch.
- Alex Parker did his best to keep the Tigers in the game as he allowed just one hit and struck out five over the final 2.2 innings.
- David Marriggi (1-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up seven runs, six earned, over four-plus innings.
- Michael Kelin (3-0) allowed four runs, three earned, over six innings to pick up the victory. He helped his cause as the designated hitter by driving in a run.
- Palacios broke out of his mini slump by going 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored.
