Tigers Drop Second-Straight One-Run Game

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For the second time in as many games, the Towson University baseball team nearly crawled out of a five-run hole, only to fall, 5-4, to William & Mary in the second game of a doubleheader Friday evening at Plumeri Park.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers entered the ninth inning trailing by one run. Colin Gimblet started the inning with a bloop double down the right field line.
  • After Mark Grunber advanced the runner with a bunt, Logan Burke laced a ball up the middle that hit the pitcher and resulted in an out.
  • The next hitter was retired to end the game.
  • For the second-straight game, WM scored the first five runs and opened a 5-0 lead.
  • The Tribe put up single runs in the first and second innings.
  • After the first hitters were retired in the fourth, a walk ignited a rally that included a two-run triple from Matt McDermott and a run-scoring double from Ryan Hall.
  • Towson got on the board in the fifth inning thanks to a Richie Palacios home run to right center. Billy Lennox scored on the play after reaching on a single up the middle.
  • The Tigers got rolling again in the sixth inning after Noah Cabrera walked and Trey Martinez was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out.
  • Dirk Masters delivered a RBI single to right center and Palacios came through again with a run-scoring single to right center.
  • Towson got the game off to a strong start in the first inning as they loaded the bases with one out. They could not cash in as a grounder up the middle was backhanded by the second baseman who gloved flipped to second to start the double play.
  • Gavin Weyman came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning and did not allow a run over 3.1 innings. He gave up four hits and struck out six.
  • Dean Stramara pitched the eighth and struck out two of the three hitters he faced.
  • Bo Plagge (1-3) suffered the loss after surrendering five runs on five hits over 3.2 innings.
  • Chris Farrell (2-1) gave up two runs on five hits and five walks over five innings to pick up the victory.
  • Wade Strain (6) gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
 
Inside the Boxscore
  • Richie Palacio went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
  • The home run was his sixth of the season.
  • Colin Gimblet collected two hits and has now reached safely in 17-straight games.
  • Each of the top five hitters in the lineup collected hits.
