Tigers Fall to George Washington on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - Led by seniors Renate van Oorschodt, A.J. Gomer and Barbora Vasilkova, the Towson University women's tennis won two doubles matches to take an early lead against George Washington, but the Colonials swept all six singles matches to take a 6-1 victory Sunday at the Towson Center Courts.

The Tigers (10-9) have won seven of their last 11 matches after going 3-2 in five matches over the last four days.

"It was much closer than the score indicated," said head coach Jamie Peterson. "We came out the way we should every match with tons of energy and fight. GW is a strong and improved team, having lost a close match with No. 47 William & Mary, 4-3, and beating Harvard, 4-3."

Gomer, who played in her 100th career singles match on Saturday at No. 47 William & Mary, teamed up with van Oorschodt to earn a 7-6 (3) win at No. 2 doubles, coming back from down 5-2 to seal the doubles point for Towson. The senior duo was named to the All-CAA Second Team a year ago.

Vasilkova paired with junior Lucy Gloninger to post a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Gloninger had her seven-match winning streak stopped with a 6-4, 6-2 loss at No. 5.

Senior Nicole Shakhnazarova played in her 100th career singles match on Sunday, falling at No. 1 in a very tight contest, 7-5, 7-6. She has totaled 64 career wins which rank her fifth in program history. She is also eighth in program history with a .640 winning percentage (64-36). Yesterday marked the 100th match of her career.

Senior Lucy Williams appeared in her 104th career singles and 98th career doubles match on Sunday. She leads the team with 12 doubles victories this season, posting a 12-4 record.

van Oorschodt also earned a singles victory on Sunday, picking up a 6=2, 3-6, 10-7 win over Victoria Kogan.

The Tigers will play four more matches this week, including three on the road, beginning Tuesday when they head to Villanova.
