Women’s Soccer Edged in Overtime at USF

TAMPA, Fla. -- Despite a valiant effort all night in the defensive third, the Towson University women's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime at the University of South Florida Thursday night.

The game featured quick strikes on both sides as the Tigers (0-1-0) and Bulls fought off nearly 120 minutes of weather delays at Corbett Stadium.

Towson got its first goal of the season from junior midfielder Justine Stoner in the seventh minute. Seeing the field for the first time in her Black & Gold career, Megan Collins turned aside four USF shots.

USF (1-0-0) got the game-winner in the 100th minute from Aubrey Megrath while Andrea Hauksdottir tallied two assists. Fanny Pelletier-Laroche scored the Bulls' first goal of the night in the 48th minute.

How it Happened
  • After warmups, lightning in the area forced a delay of over an hour as the game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., did not get underway under 8:30 p.m.
  • After sustaining pressure early, the Tiger defense strong, including the first career save for senior keeper Collins.
  • Towson countered in the seventh minute as junior midfielder Nikki Logan chipped a pass on over the Bulls' defense, finding Stoner alone on the left side. The latter chipped a shot over USF keeper Sydney Martinez for the first goal of the 2018 season.
  • Sydny Nasello had a great look at the goal for USF, but sent her chance high in the 30th minute. At that point, the Bulls were out-shooting the Tigers 6-1, with the lone effort standing as Stoner's goal.
  • USF's best chance of the first half came in the 36th minute as Emma Davies slipped through Towson's defense, but kissed her shot off the crossbar out of play.
  • Towson took its 1-0 lead into halftime before a second lightning delay forced a long delay. The second half did not begin until after 10 p.m.
  • The Bulls wasted little time tying the game as Pelletier-Laroche scored just three minutes into the fresh half on a header goal. Hauksdottir sailed in the cross for the knotting goal.
  • Collins and the veteran defense in front of her, which started three seniors and a redshirt junior, made another two stops in the second half to force extra time against the reigning American Athletic Conference champions.
  • In extra time, the Bulls put pressure on the Tigers early, earning a corner kick that Hauksdottir sent in for the deciding marker.

Behind the Numbers
  • Despite pushing USF to overtime, the Tigers were out-shot 19-3. Collins finished with four saves, making two stops in either half.
  • Towson's defense limited the Bulls' chances at the goal, allowing just six shots on goal through the 100 minutes.
  • USF took eight corner kicks, while the Tigers managed a pair.
  • After a physical first half, the Tigers settled in. Towson was called for six fouls in the first 45 minutes, but whistled just four times over the next 55 minutes. USF was called for seven fouls.
  • Thursday night's game was the first contest under the guidance under new head coach Katherine Vettori.
