Women’s Soccer Falls at ODU in Final Game of Road Swing

NORFOLK, Va. – Despite senior goalkeeper Megan Collins doubling her career-best in saves, the Towson University women's soccer team fell 4-0 on the road Thursday night at Old Dominion University's Soccer Complex.

The Tigers (0-3-0) trailed 1-0 at the break, but the host Monarchs scored three times in the second half. Collins made eight saves in her third career start.

ODU (2-0-1) remained unbeaten as the Monarchs had four goals from four different sources. Natalie Johnson accounted for assists on three of the goals.

How It Happened
  • Towson applied the pressure early in the match, earning a pair of corner kicks, sent in by Justine Stoner, and a shot on goal in the first four minutes. Elizabeth Coletti took a shot, but ODU keeper Erin Davidson was bailed out by a defender behind the play.
  • Six minutes later, Towson midfielder Sarah Quick put another shot on goal, but Davidson made a save to keep it scoreless.
  • After another 20 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Monarchs broke through as Johnson sent in a free kick that was initially stopped by Collins, but ODU's Deirdre Bradley collected the rebound to score.
  • The Tigers went into halftime trailing 1-0 while putting up four shots. Old Dominion attempted seven in the first 45 minutes.
  • Out of the break, Old Dominion extended its lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute. Again Johnson played in a free ball to the head of Madison Morningstar who scored.
  • In the 64th minute, Coletti got off a shot, but was stopped by Davidson who quickly got the Monarchs upfield as Gaby Bentley made it 3-0 on Johnson's third assist.
  • The Monarchs scored the final goal of the game in the 85th minute on a corner kick played in by Iris Achterhof who found Amanda Nhek.
  • Towson had one final chance in the 88th minute as rookie Olivia Ramirez took a shot but Davidson made a save for the clean sheet.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson got more than half of its nine total shots on goal, registering five but Davidson came away with five saves. Collins made six saves in the second half, doubling her previous career best of four stops in the season opener at USF.
  • Corner kicks were even as both sides attempted five. The Tigers had a 4-0 advantage on the corners in the first half.
