TOWSON, Md. – In a game with all the scoring within seven minutes, the Towson University women's soccer team played visiting Longwood University to a 1-1 double overtime draw in the Tigers' first home game of the season.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, the Tigers (0-3-1) tied things up in the 57
th minute as
Justine Stoner potted her second goal of the season just 45 seconds after checking in. Towson got its offensive rhythm going, out-shooting Longwood 19-12 at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Longwood (1-2-1) took the lead five minutes into the second half after a shot was initially saved by Towson's
Megan Collins, but the rebound got away, allowing Kelly Almeida to score.
How It Happened
- Longwood put pressure on the Tigers early as Kathryn Miller took a shot on goal just 51 seconds into the first meeting between the schools in Towson, but Collins was quick to save it to keep the game tied at zero.
- In the 18th minute, the Lancers took back-to-back shots, with the first stopped by Collins and the second one getting past Collins, but Stoner kept the ball out for a team save.
- Midway through the half, Towson got its first good chance at the goal as Nikki Logan sent in a corner kick, setting up Stoner for a shot. Longwood's keeper, Madison Van Dyke, made a sprawling save to keep it tied 0-0.
- In the 35th minute, Lexi Andrews sailed in a corner to Alexis Toles, who got a solid header chance fell off just left of the goal. Toles again had a solid chance but the attempt was tipped left.
- Back-to-back Andrews corner kicks set up freshman Camryn Anderson with the Tigers' best chance of the first half in the 42nd minute. The rookie got up and clear of the defenders in the box, but Van Dyke made a jumping save to send both teams into the break scoreless.
- Early in the second half, Emily Mothersbaugh ripped a shot in the box the shot was initially stopped by Collins' hands, but the rebound got away and at the feet of Almeida, who broke the tied in the 50th minute.
- At 55:30, head coach Katherine Vettori subbed in Stoner and Sarah Quick, both of whom would factor in the equalizer just 45 seconds later.
- Quick had the ball 25 yards from the goal in the middle of the field, sliding a pass over to Stoner who tied things with a 20-yard rip past Van Dyke to level the match 1-1.
- Despite Towson holding much of the pressure in the latter part of the second half, the Tigers did not get another shot on goal until the 82nd minute when freshman Jenna Blank put a shot on that was halted by Van Dyke.
- In the first overtime, Towson had a bulk of the chances, including one from Logan in the 94th minute that went just left of the top corner. With the clock under 10 seconds, Blank had a perfect chance at the goal 18 yards out but her shot lifted just high and banged off the middle of the cross bar, sending the match into double overtime.
- Like the first half, Longwood got on its horses early and pressured Collins, but the Andover, Massachusetts native was up to the task and continued the extra set.
- The game's final chance came in the 106th minute as Blank had another solid look at the goal, but Van Dyke made a dive to the left post, coming up with the save and forcing a draw.
Behind the Numbers
- The Tigers out-shot Longwood 19-12, putting five chances on goal. The Lancers had seven shots on goal, with Collins stopping five. Van Dyke made four saves for Longwood.
- Towson controlled the ball in the 20 minutes of extra time, taking five shots and allowing just two. The Tigers had 10 shots in the second half.
- Towson split its eight corner kicks in each half, while keeping the Lancers off the flag and allowing just four chances.
- This was Towson's second overtime game of the young season. The Tigers are 0-1-1 in extra time this season after falling in the first overtime at USF in the season opener. In both Towson overtime games this season, Stoner has scored the Tigers' lone goal.
