Volleyball Drops Five-Setter in Baltimore Bash Opener

BALTIMORE -- Playing against outside competition for the first time this fall, the Towson University women's volleyball team dropped a hearbreaking five-set match against Radford University in the Tigers' first match of The Baltimore Bash Presented by The Lord Baltimore Hotel.

The Tigers (0-1) took the first set 25-19 before rallying to take the fourth 25-23 and forcing a fifth frame at Reitz Arena on the campus of Loyola University Maryland. The Highlanders (1-0) claimed the fifth set 15-8.

How it Happened
  • With the first set deadlocked at 7-7 and both teams working out early-season jitters, the Tigers went on an 8-1 run to take a 15-8 lead, capped by a Jocelyn Kuilan kill.
  • The Highlanders, who won the Big South Conference Tournament last season, answered with a 5-1 rally of their own to make it 23-18 in favor of Towson. Head coach Don Metil called timeout to resettle his team and Towson got the final two points of the frame on kills from Emily Jarome and Olivia Finckel.
  • The second set was tight early, neither team gaining more than a two-point lead until Radford went up 7-3 on a Towson attack error. The Tigers took a 4-1 run to pull back within one as Jarome knocked down a set from Peyton Moyles to make it 11-10 Radford.
  • Towson did not pull back within three until Kuilan made it 21-18 but Radford finished the second with a 4-2 to take the set 25-20.
  • Radford jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth set, but the Tigers ripped off seven-straight points to take a one-point, 11-10 lead. The Highlanders surged back with an 8-2 run to grab a 19-13 lead. Towson scored five more points in the set while Radford kept its distance to earn a 25-18 win.
  • In the fourth set, Towson held a narrow 16-15 lead of a kill by Olamide Sonuga, which sparked a 5-1 run and a 21-16 Towson lead. The Highlanders made a 6-2 run to pull back within a point of Towson, 23-22, but Towson got two more kills in the frame from Finckel to force a fifth set and a 25-23 Towson win.
  • After the Tigers took a small 4-3 lead in the fifth set, Radford went on a run to go up by seven and take an 11-4 advantage. Towson could not pull back and dropped the fifth set 15-8.
