Volleyball Sweeps Through Siena for First Win

BALTIMORE -- A strong first set with a .684 hitting percentage paced the Towson University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Siena College Saturday afternoon.

Towson (1-1) topped the Saints 25-13, 25-14, 25-18 in its first match of the day during the Baltimore Bash Presented by The Lord Baltimore Hotel, hosted by Loyola University Maryland. The Tigers dropped in service aces at Reitz Arena, with Anna Holehouse, Annie Ertz and Fay Bakodimou each posting a pair.

How it Happened
  • With the first set tied at 2-2, the Tigers pushed past the Saints with a 5-0 run that included a Holehouse ace and a pair of kills by Jocelyn Kuilan. Siena pulled back to make it 8-6 thanks to a pair of service aces.
  • Towson recomposed itself and went on a 10-3 run to eventually claim the first set 25-13. The Tigers hit .684 in the frame while limiting Siena to a .200 percentage.
  • In the second set, Towson jumped out early on the Saints, building a 5-2 lead in the first seven points. Consistent setting from Claudia Lopez and Kristin Spengler helped the Tigers eventually build an 11-5 lead.
  • A relentless attack at the net from freshman Emily Jarome and strong blocking helped the Tigers build to a 21-8 lead.
  • Trailing by double digits, Siena fought back, reeling off four-straight points. But the Tigers closed out the set, scoring four of the next six points to take a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead.
  • The third and final set was close early, with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead until Towson held a 7-4 advantage thanks to a service ace from Jocelyn Kuilan followed by a Saints ball handling error.
  • Siena tied the set at 10-10, 11-11 and 12-12 before Towson went on a 9-2 run to gain separation. With Bakodimou on the line to service, Towson ripped off the final three points of the match to pick up the 3-0 victory.

Behind the Numbers
  • After struggling in the attack game last night against Radford, the Tigers bounced back Saturday afternoon to hit .475 for the match. Jarome, Olamide Sonuga and Silvia Grassini all hit over 50 percent for the match, paced by Grassini's 7-of-11 (.636).
  • Saturday's first match was the first time Towson swept an opponent and kept its foes below 20 points in all three sets since Oct. 22, 2017 against William & Mary. It was the first such match in nonconference action since Sept. 10, 2017 when Towson topped Lafayette 25-13, 25-17, 25-17.
  • Six different Tigers put up service aces against the Saints. Jarome, Kuilan and Spengler had one apiece.
  • Towson had eight total blocks on Saturday, including seven assisted. Sonuga had one solo and one assisted while Grassini and Olivia Finckel had two blocks assisted.
