Volleyball Falters in Baltimore Bash Finale at Loyola

BALTIMORE -- Despite a big rally in the fourth game, the Towson University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 in the finale of the Baltimore Bash Presented by The Lord Baltimore Hotel Saturday night.

Towson (1-2) rallied from a 20-15 deficit in the third set and trailing 2-0 in the match to force a fourth frame. Junior Annie Ertz put up her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs.

Additionally, redshirt senior libero Anna Holehouse was named to the Baltimore Bash All-Tournament Team after putting up 62 digs, averaging 5.17 per set. Towson finished the Bash with a 1-2 record, falling 3-2 to Radford on the opening day before topping Siena 3-0 early on Saturday.

How it Happened
  • The first set featured seven ties early before Loyola (2-1) broke away from Towson with a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead.
  • But the Tigers took their turn to rally, ripping off seven unanswered points with Holehouse on the serve. Holehouse scored an ace in the run, while senior Jocelyn Kuilan knocked down two kills, helping Towson to a 17-15 lead.
  • After both teams traded blows, the Greyhounds put together a small surge to go up 22-19. Loyola finished the first set with three points in four rallies to win 25-21.
  • Out of the set break, Towson came out strong, building a 7-2 lead in the first nine points of the frame. Ertz scored two kills in the run while Olivia Finckel and Olamide Sonuga scored a pair of block assists.
  • Once again, Loyola surged past Towson, taking an 11-9 lead, capitalizing on several Towson attack miscues.
  • Towson then tied the game at five more times as both teams went back and forth on the serve. When the match was tied 16-16, Towson took advantage of a Loyola attack error, followed by a Kuilan kill to go up 18-16.
  • But Loyola answered back with a five-point streak to take a 21-18 lead, staving off a Towson run to secure the second game 25-20.
  • In the fourth set, both teams made small runs of two and three points, neither side gaining control of the scoreboard. With Towson leading 15-14, Loyola ran off a six-point run to go up 20-15. Attack errors proved costly for Towson in that span.
  • Down 22-19 in the third set and 2-0 in the Match, the Tigers came alive, scoring five of the next seven points to deadlock the set at 24-24. Claudia Lopez got sneaky with the set tied and dropped in a would-be set for the Tigers' to take a one-point lead before setting up the game-winning point to Kuilan.
  • After both trades scored one- and two-point rallies in the fourth set, tying things at 8-8, Loyola put a 10-point run together to take an 18-8 lead. With the set score 19-12, Loyola logged six of the final seven points for a 25-13 set win.

  • Holehouse posted a season-high 26 digs in the match, en route to All-Tournament honors. Her digs against Loyola surpassed the 25 she put up against Radford in five sets of the opening match.
