Stoner Leads Tigers with Career Outing at UMBC

BALTIMORE -- Behind a career night from Justine Stoner, the Towson University women's soccer team overcame a deficit, topping local rival UMBC 2-1 Monday night at UMBC Stadium.

Stoner led the Tigers (2-5-1) with three points on Monday night, scoring a goal and adding an assist to break a 1-1 tie. Evelyn Neidert accounted for the Tigers' second goal, her first game-winning goal in over a year.

UMBC (0-6-0) got its goal from Danielle Fuentes in the 29th minute, but the marker would not stand up as Towson scored one goal in each half. Making her first start, Retriever keeper Jade Wilkins made four saves, but surrendered a pair of goals.

How it Happened
  • Towson controlled the pace early, keeping the host Retrievers off the defensive end for the first 15 minutes. The Tigers got a pair of shots early, including one on frame from Nikki Logan.
  • UMBC took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as Fuentes scored after confusion in the Tigers' penalty area allowed the Retriever to get an open look and score.
  • But the Tigers answered back two minutes later as Stoner got a perfect chance after a UMBC foul 22 yards from the goal. The junior midfielder stepped up and hammered home the tying mark to the top corner for a 1-1 mark in the 31st.
  • Stoner's goal proved to be the final strike of the first half as neither side could produce another marker.
  • Out of the gate in the second half, Sarah Quick had a good look at the goal, getting off the would-best tiebreaker, but UMBC's keeper Jade Wilkins made a sprawling save to keep the chance from sneaking under the crossbar.
  • Ten minutes into the fresh half, Neidert got a perfect cross from Stoner after a UMBC foul 30 yards from the goal. The latter sent in a perfect feed and found Neidert on the back end, allowing Neidert to break the tie.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson out-shot the Retrievers 10-6 in the match, including six total chances in the second half. Megan Collins made one save for the Tigers.
  • The Tigers got two corner kicks, both coming in the second half. UMBC had one chance on the corner in the first half.
  • Both teams were called for a dozen fouls, with either team drawing six whistles in each half.
  • Stoner added to her team-leading goal total as she scored her fourth goal of the season. The junior doubled her previous career mark of two, scored in her rookie season.
  • This marks the first back-to-back wins for Towson head coach Katherine Vettori, who took over the program in January. It is the first time the Tigers have won consecutive games since late August of last season.
