Gast Gets Game-Winner in Overtime Versus Lehigh

TOWSON, Md. -- It seems that the theme for the Towson University women's soccer team this week is career firsts coming in overtime.

On Wednesday afternoon, redshirt junior Renee Gast scored her first career goal in double overtime, lifting Towson over visiting Lehigh at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

The 2-1 victory over the Mountain Hawks gave Towson its third-straight win, and second in the last three games over a Patriot League foe. On Thursday night, CAA Rookie of the Week Jenna Blank scored her first career goal in overtime down the road at Loyola.

Five different Tigers (3-5-1) notched points over the Mountain Hawks, including a double assist on the game-winner from Sarah Quick and Monica Scaglione.

Kayla Arestivo posted the goal for Lehigh (3-4-0) as keeper Miranda Royds made 10 saves.

How it Happened
  • Lehigh controlled the pace early, getting four shots and a pair of corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of the match. After that spurt, it was Towson's turn to control the ball as Justine Stoner, Nikki Logan and Evelyn Neidert ripped shots in succession.
  • Ten minutes later, Lehigh broke the stalemate as Arestivo collected the ball in the Tigers' defensive third, dribbled free and scored on a 22-yard shot to the top corner.
  • Trailing, Towson pushed back in the 26th minute as Logan and Christiana Davey put two shots on goal in a seconds.
  • Megan Collins was forced to make saves in the final 10 minutes of the first half to keep it a one-goal game at halftime.
  • As has been the norm for the Tigers this season, Towson came out firing early in the second half. Logan took a pass from Jodie Burchell near the top of the box and let a shot go that was saved initially by Royds, but the ball, made slick by a light rain at half time, got away from Mountain Hawk keeper. Stoner crashed the neat and tucked home the game-tying goal in the 55th minute.
  • Both teams had plenty of offensive chances the two sides combined for 21 shots in the second 45 minutes. Royds made six saves for Lehigh while Collins turned aside three to force overtime.
  • Lehigh had the best chance of the first overtime period as Sidonie Warnecker posted a shot in the final 10 seconds, but Collins was there to corral the attempt and force Towson's second double overtime of the year.
  • Three minutes into the final frame, the Tigers got a throw-in chance in front of the Lehigh bench. Scaglione sent in a cross that tipped off the head of Quick and fell at Gast's feet. The redshirt junior, coming off a season lost to injury, got the ball and booted home the deciding goal.
Behind the Numbers
  • It was a high-powered offensive day at the Tiger Soccer Complex. The teams combined for 43 shots, with Towson attempting 20 while Lehigh managed 23. The Tigers put a dozen chances on frame, while Royds made 10 saves. Collins got her third-straight win with six saves.
  • Lehigh controlled the corner, taking eight, while Towson earned three. The Tigers kept a bulk of the Mountain Hawk threats on the corner clear of the goal.
  • Towson has now won three-straight games for the first time since winning six-straight early in the 2015 season.
  • Wednesday's game was the first of the season at home for the Tigers, including the first home victory for first-year head coach Katherine Vettori.
  • The Tigers have scored multiple goals in their last three games, the first time since the final three games of the 2014 regular season Towson has managed that feat.
  • Towson improved to 2-1-0 this season against opponents from the Patriot League, with all three games decided by a goal. The Tigers bested Loyola 3-2 in overtime last week before today's match against Lehigh. Two weeks ago, the Tigers fell 1-0 on the road at Bucknell.
Quotable - Towson Head Coach Katherine Vettori
  • I want to give Lehigh all the credit. That was a fantastic, very back-and-forth game. I'm sure as a soccer fan, very fun to watch.
  • I think that we're starting to connect and possess the ball better, which is creating some more chances and we've been working on finishing. It's nice that the scoring has been spread around. (Justine Stoner) got another great one. That's her fifth of the year. She's working hard, so I'm glad for her.
  • On Renee Gast scoring - It's been really neat to see. She works very, very hard. She was out for a year and technically, she was a little behind and had to work that much harder, but she has the heart of a lion. I'm thrilled for her that she got that game-winning goal today. It was a wonderful team effort all the way around, including all the players on the bench.
  • Penn is quality. We're going to enjoy this for now and then get back to work tomorrow.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers wrap up a three-game week on Sunday with a nonconference finale against the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
  • Penn is currently 4-1-0 on the season, with the lone blemish coming against No. 13 N.C. State. The Quakers have a Friday night game at home against UMBC.
