Women’s Soccer Nipped by Penn in Nonconference Finale

TOWSON, Md. -- All good things must come to an end, but that doesn't mean the Towson University women's soccer team went down without a fight.

The Tigers fell 1-0 Sunday afternoon against Penn at the Tiger Soccer Complex in Towson's nonconference finale. The game was even throughout the contest as both sides took 14 shots.

Towson (3-6-1) saw its three-match winning streak come to a halt, but the Tigers did win three games in a 10-day span. Megan Collins made four saves against five shots on goal.

Penn (6-1-0) got its goal from Emily Sands in the 47th minute. The Quakers' goalkeeper, Kitty Qu, had one of her busiest day of the season as Towson put up 14 total shots, seven of which were on goal.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers possessed the ball early and spent a majority of the first half in the Quakers' defensive side. McKenzie McCaull got Towson's first shot of the day, putting that effort on goal in the eighth minute.
  • Seven minutes later, the Tigers put another two chances on goal as Sarah Quick and Jenna Blank each got loose for attempts.
  • Penn got off four shots in the first 20 minutes, but only one found the goal and Collins was there for the stop.
  • At the break with the score tied 0-0, Towson led Penn in shots, taking eight while allowing just six. Collins made her one save in the first 45 minutes while Qu made five.
  • Out of the gates in the second half, Penn came out on offense. Sasha Stephens took the ball down the right side and slid a pass to Sands, who scored the game's lone goal.
  • In the 67th and 69th minute, Towson challenged the Quakers with a pair of chances from Justine Stoner and Lexy Andrews, who tipped a free ball goalward, but Qu made the stop, her final save of the match.
  • Trailing 1-0 late in the match, Towson put pressure back on Penn as Blank and Quick again combined for back-to-back shots but the first was blocked and the second went high.
Behind the Numbers
  • The two sides were even on offense with both teams taking 14 shots. Towson put seven shots on goal, forcing Qu to tie her season-high in saves. Collins made four stops, including three in the second half.
  • Corner kicks were also tied as both sides got three attempts. Towson had two in the first half with the Quakers had a pair in the second.
  • Blank paced Towson with three total shots, including one on net. In total, five different Tigers put shots on goal while four player shad multiple shot attempts.
  • Despite a physical contest, the whistle was relatively silent as just nine fouls were called. The Quakers were called for six fouls while Towson was called for three.
