Women’s Soccer Falls in CAA Opener at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- An early deficit for the Towson University women's soccer team proved to be too much to overcome as the Tigers fell 6-0 on the road at defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion Hofstra University Thursday evening.

Lucy Porter scored a hat trick for the Pride (7-3-0, 1-0-0 CAA). Jenn Buoncore added a goal and two assists while Monique Iannella had three assists.

Megan Collins made seven saves in goal for Towson (3-7-1, 0-1-0 CAA) while there were two team saves. In a quasi-homecoming, rookie Jenna Blank took a team-best three shots, playing just 35 miles from her hometown of Holbrook, New York.

How it Happened
  • Towson challenged early as Jenna Blank and Sam Lotti each put a chance on goal in the 15th minute but both were halted by Jenna Borresen in goal
  • The Pride took an early 1-0 lead after Iannella sent in a cross to the feet of Porter, who controlled and finished the play.
  • Hofstra continued to pressure with back-to-back shots in the 21st minute. The Pride scored again in the 25th minute on a Buoncore feed to Shepard.
  • The Pride scored twice more in the first half to take a 4-0 lead into the break. Sabrina Bryan scored in the 38th minute on an Iannella feed, followed three minutes later by a goal from Porter, her second of the night. Iannella had her third helper of the season.
  • Porter finished the hat trick in the 70th minute on a Bryan assist that was crossed in to the left side. The Pride added a second goal in the half as Buoncore converted a penalty kick attempt.
Behind the Numbers
  • Hofstra out-shot the Tigers 25-11 in the match, but despite the one-sided finish, Towson managed seven of its attempts in the second half. Five of those chances were on cage.
  • Collins finished with seven saves for Towson. Hofstra split time between keepers. Borresen got the start and made two saves while Ashley Wilson subbed on to start the second half and stopped five Towson chances.
  • Towson played a controlled defense, committing just eight fouls while the Pride were whistled 16 times. The Tigers managed two corners while Hofstra had seven.
