TOWSON, Md. – Having to compete in a pouring rain at the Tiger Sports Complex, the Towson University women's soccer team (3-8-1, 0-2-0 CAA) narrowly fell 1-0 to William & Mary (4-7-0, 1-1-0 CAA) on Sunday afternoon.
Key Match Stats:
- Towson spread its shots around, with 11 different Tigers taking aim at the goal. Six Towson players had a shot on goal, with three having multiple shots.
- Justine Stoner, Evelyn Neidert and Elizabeth Coletti each had two shots and one on goal for the Tigers.
- Despite the loss, Megan Collins had five saves for Towson, including four in the second half of play. She did not allow a goal in the final 83 minutes.
- William & Mary's Sarah Segan scored unassisted in the seventh minute off a shot from the right side of the box inside the left post, the only goal of the game. Katelyn Briguglio had the win in goal with six saves.
- Shots were nearly even in the game: Towson had 14 to William & Mary's 15, with shots on goal being even at six each. The second half saw a majority of chances, with a combined 22 of the 29 shots coming in the final 45 minutes.
- Both sides played in a strong and steady rainfall all game.
How it Happened:
- After Towson held on a trio of early William & Mary corner kicks, Sarah Segan pushed into the box around a defender and shot from the right side 10 yards out, scoring inside the left post to make it 1-0 Tribe in the seventh minute.
- Towson nearly got on the board in the 16th minute as a Nikki Logan shot close range was blocked. Seconds later, Camryn Anderson had a chance long range with the keeper off the line, sending the ball just wide right.
- In minute 35, a foul on W&M set up a free kick outside the box on the left side. Evelyn Neidert went for the goal with her shot slamming the crossbar, going out of play. Towson trailed at the half 1-0.
- Megan Collins had a huge pair of saves in less than 40 seconds as Segan got off a couple of hard shots, holding the deficit at one in the 58th minute.
- Towson sent a pair of long range shots towards the cage in a span of two minutes, one from Elizabeth Coletti, the other from Justine Stoner, with each being saved by Katelyn Briguglio.
- The Tigers got some speed and attacked in the 77th minute. A cross from Danielle Gardner found McKenzie McCaull next to the right post, but a header attempt missed wide. Towson put three more shots on W&M in the proceeding minutes, but was not able to put a ball in the net.
- The Tigers had one final look on goal in the 88th minute, but Sydney Davis's shot was saved by Briguglio. A free kick in the final seconds was blocked, ending the game with a 1-0 victory for W&M.
