COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Saturday the Towson University women's tennis team competed in the second day of the Bedford Cup tournament at the University of Maryland and had a solid showing.
The Tigers are competing at the 2018 Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic Division I Championships.
"We had a slow start to things yesterday but performance and results improved today," said head coach
Jamie Peterson. "In particular, co-captain
Lucy Gloninger had a great win over last year's number one from George Washington. Amelia Lawson added two straight set singles wins today and paired with
Claire Bedi to reach the consolation doubles final.
Alexa Martinez played very well also with straight set wins over Virginia Tech, but then losing to their top singles player in a close three-set match."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In doubles action, Themis Haliou and Yevgeniya Shusterman faced a pair from Georgetown, while Bedi and Lawson took on another pair of Hoya opponents and Martinez and Gloninger battled against a George Washington pair.
- As all three Towson doubles teams fell they entered the consolation round. Martinez and Gloninger took down a Georgetown team in the opening round, to end up facing Bedi and Lawson in the second round.
- Bedi and Lawson took the win 6-3 and will face Sydney Goodson and Eena De Santis from Georgetown for the final of doubles consolation.
- In singles consolation Martinez defeated Jade Woo from Virginia Tech, 6-3 and 6-1 before falling to Hokies' Samantha Gillas.
- Lawson took down her Coppin State opponent 6-4 and 6-1 and defeated Virginia Tech's Dori Mesmer and 6-1, 6-4. She will face Maryland's Anastasia Gevel tomorrow.
- Gloninger had a strong performance in the singles consolation with two 6-0 wins against Coppin State's Tinashe Gwaze, before taking a strong win over her next opponent from George Washington, 6-3 and 7-5. She will face Gillas from Virginia Tech tomorrow.

The Tigers remain for the final day of the Bedford Cup tomorrow.
