Women’s Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision Against Utah State

TOWSON, Md. -- A penalty kick from Towson University leading-scorer Justine Stoner tie the women's soccer match, but the Tigers fell 3-1 against visiting Utah State University Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

Towson (0-5-1) battled with the Aggies through the full 90 minutes, putting solid chances on goal but Utah State scored twice in the final 15 minutes to decide the game.

How it Happened
  • Towson (0-5-1) got the game's first chance as McKenzie McCaull put a chance on net but Aggie keeper Grace McGuire made the save.
  • In the 20th minute, Utah State's Sara Noel got loose in the box, getting off a point-blank shot. Megan Collins made an excellent save with both hands to keep the match scoreless.
  • Both teams went up and down the field several times before the 41st minute as Utah State's Erin Rickenbach scored after banging a shot off the underside of the crossbar. Marli Niederhauser slipped the ball over to Rickenbach to make it a 1-0 game at halftime.
  • The second half was chippy as both teams increased the physicality of the match.
  • In the 67th minute, a Utah State player was whistled for a handball inside the penalty box, setting up Stoner for her first career penalty kick attempt. The junior converted to increase her season goal total to three.
  • Utah State broke the tie in the 75th minute after Kanyan Ward-Merrill took a shot that was initially saved by Collins, but the rebound came out and allowed Ashley Cardozo to score from the left side of the box.
  • Utah State added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute after Danielle Nowers sailed a ball over the Tiger defense to the feet of Marli Niederhauser, who came in one-on-one with the keeper.
  • In the 89th minute, Towson had one final chance as Stoner sent in a perfect attempt to the top right corner, but McGuire pushed it away with seconds on clock.

Behind the Numbers
  • The Tigers out-shot Utah State 16-13, putting six chances on goal. The Aggies got eight shots on goal. Collins finished with five saves, as did McGuire.
  • Towson had the edge on corner kicks, sending in seven while Utah State had three, all coming in the first half.
  • It was a chippy match as the Tigers were called for 18 fouls while Utah State was whistled 15 times.
