Lightning-Fast Strikes for Towson at Loyola Lead the Way

TOWSON, Md. – After a two-hour lightning delay just six miles from home, the Towson University women's soccer team used lightning-fast chances to pass Loyola University Maryland in overtime Thursday night at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

After two goals in less than a minute to take a 2-0 lead, the host Greyhounds tied the match in the second half. But it was rookie Jenna Blank who provided the heroics as Towson claimed a 3-2 overtime win on the road, the team's first of the season.

Blank got a pass from fellow newcomer Chloe Sherry, split through two defenders and took a shot near the top of the box. Loyola's keeper, Sumer Rahe, made the initial stop but Blank's shot had enough pace to carry it over the line, handing first-year head coach Katherine Vettori her first win for the Black & Gold.

Additionally, McKenzie McCaull added three points on the night with a goal and an assist while Nikki Logan also potted her first of the year to put the Tigers up 2-0.

Jourdan Ziff scored both of Loyola's markers as Sarah Bayer and Sarah Mirr added assists for the Greyhounds.

How It Happened
  • Loyola controlled the pace early, taking two shots in the first 10 minutes, along with a pair of corner kicks.
  • The Tigers countered with a three-minute burst as Justine Stoner had Towson first shot in the 16th minute, but the effort was blocked.
  • After the delay, Towson struck lightning fast as McCaull buried his first of the season in the 18th minute, heading home the ice breaker on a double assist from Quick and Littlefield.
  • Less than a minute later, Towson added to its lead as Logan got her first of the year in the 19th minute. McCaull had her first three-point game of the year as she slipped a pass to Littlefield, who flicked it on to Logan. It was a top-corner effort from Logan to send the Tigers into halftime up 2-0.
  • Towson out-shot the Greyhounds 6-5 in the opening 45 minutes, while Towson keeper Megan Collins turned aside three Loyola chances.
  • Loyola came out firing in the second half as Ziff cut the Tigers' lead in half with a goal in the 49th minute, fed by Mirr on a long cross. Ziff scored on a header just over Collins' hands.
  • The Greyhounds tied the match in the 62nd on Ziff's second of the match as Bayer drove the corner and chipped the assist over the defense for the equalizer.
Behind the Numbers
  • Shots were close through the entire game, with Loyola taking 11 and the Tigers ripping eight. Towson made the most of its chances, putting half of those efforts on goal and scoring on three. The Tigers afforded Rahe just one save on the night.
  • Collins made five saves as she too collected the first win of her Towson career.
  • Towosn did not take a corner kick all evening, but weathered the Greyhounds six chances.
  • In her first season with the program, Vettori got her first win as a Tiger after spending six seasons on Charles Street as the head coach at Loyola. She becomes the first head coach in program history to get the first win at the helm of the program in an overtime match.
  • The Tigers are 1-1-1 in overtime matches this season while winning their third-straight over the Greyhounds, all by one-goal differences.
  • Towson is just the second time this season to score multiple goals against the Greyhounds. The Tigers currently hold the season-high for goals scored against Loyola, surpassing UC Riverside's pair on Aug. 19.
Quotable - Towson Head Coach Katherine Vettori
  • "It was a great battle at Loyola this evening. I am extremely proud of our student-athletes' play and fight, especially after a two-hour weather delay. We had a solid first half and scored two beautiful goals. I give Loyola credit as they battled back and equalized in the second half. It's a positive reward for hard work to get the win in overtime. I believe we grew as a team tonight."

Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers return home for a third-straight Sunday as they continue the Greater Baltimore theme of the week.
  • Towson hosts UMBC at the Tiger Soccer Complex with a 1 p.m. first kick.
  • The Retrievers (0-5-0) host Mount St. Mary's on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Catonsville.
