Volleyball Falls to Hofstra in Homestand Finale

TOWSON, Md. -- All good things must come to an end. For the Towson University women's volleyball team, a program-record tying 10-match homestand came to a conclusion Monday night at SECU Arena.

The Tigers (6-11, 1-2 CAA) fell to the visiting Hofstra Pride (11-5, 1-1 CAA) in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) in Towson's third Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) match in a four-day span.

Olivia Finckel led the Tigers with 14 kills as she hit .286 on the night. The Pride had three players in double digits including a 12-kill, 12-dig double from Aisha Skinner.

How it Happened
  • The early portion of the first set was tight as the teams tied four times in the first 10 points. Hofstra scored four unanswered points as part of a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead. Both sides traded serves until the Pride knocked down three in a row for a 16-10 lead.
  • Later in the first frame, Towson clawed back in to make it 20-16 Hofstra, thanks to a kill from Finckel, who aided in a block with Olamide Sonuga. Hofstra scored three of the final four points for a 25-21 set win.
  • In the second set, Towson grabbed a 5-3 lead, which included four kills from four different sources, Finckel, Jocelyn Kuilan, Silvia Grassini and Maria Tomasevic. Hofstra scored four in a row to take a 6-5 lead back from the Tigers. The Pride controlled the middle portion of the second set and took a 10-7 lead after a 4-1 run.
  • The visitors scored five unanswered points to take a 24-17 lead before Towson stopped the run on a Finckel kill. A ball-handling error against the Tiger gave Hofstra the second set 25-18.
  • Again Towson raced out to a 5-3 lead in the third set but Hofstra answered with a 3-0 run to take a 6-5 advantage. Towson chipped away eventually built a two-point, 13-11 lead in the middle of the set.
  • Hofstra scored back-to-back points several times around a Tiger kill to tie the match at 21. The Pride won the match on back-to-back points to win the third 25-23.
Behind the Numbers
  • Finckel paced the Tigers with 14 kills on 28 swings. She hit for .286 while Sonuga led the Tigers' with a .429 hitting percentage with six kills on 14 swings and no errors. Sonuga added in three block assists as well.
  • Hofstra hit for .297 in the match, led by Michela Rucli's .786 hitting percentage as she went 11 of 14 with no errors. Skinner led the match with a dozen digs as well.
  • Towson finished with five team blocks as Finckel scored one block solo. Six different Tigers added block assists at the net as well.
  • Anna Holehouse finished with nine digs, bringing her career total to 1,996, just four shy of becoming the program's first player to surpass 2,000 in her career and seventh in CAA history.
