Women’s Soccer Falls on the Road at Elon

ELON, N.C. - The Towson University women's soccer team had a strong first half but fell 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Elon University's Rudd Field.
Towson (3-10-1, 0-4-0 CAA) had 20 shots by twelve different players but it was Elon (3-5-3, 1-2-0 CAA) won to cut into the Tigers' series lead, which now stands at 3-2-0.
How it happened:
  • Elon came out early and took two chances, but the Tiger defense kept those attempts away from the goal.
  • Towson got back-to-back corner kicks in the 12th minute, sent in by Justine Stoner and Nikki Logan. The latter's cross set up a header by Elizabeth Coletti but the shot went over the bar.TN
  • After some quick substitutions by both teams, Elon had three more shot attempts.
  • Then there was a nearly even exchange of fouls for both teams throughout the half as Towson was called for eight while Elon was whistled six times.
  • The first half ended with another shot by Elon's Kate McKay that was saved by Towson goalie Megan Collins.
  • Towson got things rolling in the second half as Christiana Davey  put a shot on goal in the 51st minute, but it was saved by Elon's goalie Valentina Estrada.
  • The Tigers had four more shot attempts but it was the Phoenix who would strike first with a goal on the near post by Taylor Paradoski assisted by Lily Harkes in the 60th minute.
  • Then in the 66th minute, Elon's Kate McKay scored the second goal with a header and put the Phoenix up 2-0.
  • Towson took 17 shots in the second half, but could not convert to cut into the Elon lead.
Behind the Numbers:
  • Towson out-shot the Phoenix 20-10 in the match, including seven chances on goal. Collins made two saves on the afternoon while Estrada stopped all seven Towson shots on frame.
  • The Tigers earned six corner kicks, splitting their chances in each half. Elon had four corner kicks, taking two in each half.
 Up Next for Towson:
  • Towson returns to the Tiger Soccer Complex on Thursday for a 3 p.m. showdown against James Madison.
  • The Dukes enter with a 5-7-0 overall mark and sit at 2-1-0 in the CAA after falling 2-0 on Sunday at Northeastern.
