Tennis Opens Spring Season on Sunday

TOWSON, Md. – Spring has arrived for the Towson University women's tennis team as the squad travels for its first match of 2019. The Tigers take on Penn State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
 
Towson enters the match season after a solid fall 2018 showing. The Tigers saw Phoebe Collins and Amelia Lawson win the doubles championship at the Greyhound Invitational in October. In the fall Towson competed at the Bedford Cup hosted by the University of Maryland, Navy's Blue & Gold Invitational and a tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's.
 
The Tigers have a new face on the team this spring, Jessica Assenmacher, who hails from South Africa. She will have her debut in Black and Gold this season.
 
Towson is on the road this weekend and next, taking on Navy on Sunday, Feb. 3 in Annapolis. After facing Navy the Tigers will host La Salle.
 
Road trips will continue for Towson throughout the early spring season as the Tigers travel to Pittsburgh to face Buffalo and Duquesne on Feb. 9 and 10. On Saturday, Feb. 16 Towson hosts Richmond.
 
Towson will face its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent on Saturday, March 2 at Hofstra. The following day the Tigers play NJIT in New Jersey before heading home. Rutgers comes to town for a home match on Friday, March 8 and the Tigers travel to George Washington on Sunday, March 10 to round out the weekend action.
 
The second CAA match will also be on the road as Towson heads to James Madison on Friday, March 15. The Tigers take their spring break trip to San Diego, California to face three teams. Towson takes on Clemson and Concordia Irvine on Tuesday, March 19 and St. Catherine's on Thursday, March 21 to round out the trip. All games in the spring break trip will be played at the Barnes Tennis Center.
 
After heading back east the Tigers face Mount St. Mary's, West Virginia and California University of Pennsylvania on the road.
 
On Friday, April 5 Towson has its first home match on its home court, hosting UNCW and Delaware State. Sunday, April 7 Drexel comes to town for a 1 p.m. start, with action against University of Maryland Eastern Shore beginning at 4 p.m.
 
The Tigers remain home to host Villanova on April 9, Delaware on April 10, Saint Joseph's on April 13 and Bucknell on April 14 before facing Coppin State on the road on April 14 to round out the regular season. The CAA Championships begin on Thursday, April 18 and will be hosted by Elon.
