Mayo's Buzzer Beater Earns Towson's First Win Over Drexel Since 2010

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After trailing by 11 at halftime, the Towson University women's basketball team came back to defeat Drexel on Friday night, 55-54. Junior Nukiya Mayo scored a buzzer-beater to seal the win, also the first Tiger win against the Dragons since 2010.

Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter led the scoring effort with 21 points while Mayo scored 13 and had eight rebounds.

How it Happened
  • The first period was a battle that began with a 6-0 Tiger lead, before the Dragons held strong on defense to come back and tie it up.
  • At the end of the first Towson and Drexel were tied 10-10 with four points each from Q. Murray and Kionna Jeter.
  • The second quarter changed the dynamic with just two points from the road team as the teams entered the locker rooms with a 23-12 advantage for the Dragons.
  • Out of the halftime, the opening minutes of the third period changed the course of the game. Murray dropped a three at the 9:28 mark and Mayo was next with a trey for herself.
  • On the next Towson possession, Ryan Holder made a layup, followed by another three from Mayo to cut the lead to four.
  • The momentum continued until Towson finally took the lead, on yet another trey from Mayo, her third straight, with two minutes left in the third.
  • Towson trailed 34-33 entering the fourth, and the lead changed nine times in the final 10 minutes.
  • Freshman Janeen Camp opened the quarter with a good layup to begin the back-and-forth scoring. With seven minutes left the Dragons had a four-point lead, which was quickly erased by a layup from Maia Lee and bucket from Jeter.
  • Drexel would take a two-point lead twice more, once with four minutes on the clock and again with just eight seconds.
  • In the last eight seconds the Dragons took the lead after two good free throws, forcing a Towson timeout. Off the inbound, Jeter found the room to drain a jumper and the home team took a timeout themselves with three seconds left on the clock and a tied score.
  • Jeter fouled out on the next play, sending Niki Metzel to the line, where she made one free throw to take the lead.
  • Towson took its final timeout and off the inbound play Mayo put up a jumper that hit the backboard perfectly to go in and seal the win as the buzzer sounded.

Beyond the Box
  • Before tonight's game, the Tigers had lost 19-straight games to Drexel. It was the longest winning streak the Dragons had against any opponent, until Towson took the win.
  • This was Jeter's fifth game this season with at least 20 points and her first 20-point game since Nov. 24 at Mount St. Mary's.
  • It was a season-high night for Mayo who shot 75 percent from three, with three of four made.
  • Tonight's win was the first time Towson has won its CAA opener since the 2015-16 season.
