TOWSON, Md. - Friday afternoon the Towson University field hockey team fell to Northeastern in the conference opener, a 2-1 final.
Gretchen Alderfer scored for the Tigers, assisted by
Beira Ho, it was her first goal of the year.
How it Happened
- The first period was dominated by corners for the Huskies as the road team set up six times for a penalty corner.Â
- One corner finally resulted in a goal as Northeastern took a 1-0 lead nine minutes in.
- Neither team saw the back of the net as the period came to a close.
- Starting the second quarter, Towson had strong offensive possessions and drew back to back corners. On the second corner, Ho received the insert and passed to Alferfer who had an open look at the goal and scored.
- The Tigers tied it up and went into halftime 1-1.
- In the third quarter both teams had opportunities, and a yellow card on Northeastern's leading scorer Lauren Rowe put the road team a woman down for five minutes. Towson got a shot off that was blocked and the Huskies took over possession.
- The home team earned the first corner of the fourth period, but a high shot would give the ball back to Northeastern.
- In the 53rd minute, the Huskies created space by the goal and found a connection to the left side of the post, sending the ball in on the ground to regain the lead.
- The final seven minutes ticked down with no offensive plays on either end of the field.
Beyond the Box
- The Tigers are on pace for their highest scoring season in recent years. Through 12 games Towson has scored 15 goals, last year through 12 games the Tigers had 12 goals total. In 2018 the Black and Gold recorded 19 total goals.Â
- With seven games remaining the Tigers need to score just four more times to tie last year's total but have plenty of opportunity to pass that mark.Towson has already matched the total goals scored from the 2017 and 2016 seasons.
- Gretchen Alderfer's goal is the second of her career. Her solo goal last season also was scored against Northeastern.
- After today's goal, seven different Tigers have scored once this season.
