TOWSON, Md. - Freshman
Georgia Beachley came in clutch for the Towson University field hockey team on Sunday, scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in double overtime for the Tigers to take the 3-2 win.
This is the first win over Georgetown since taking a 2-1 victory in 2015.
How it Happened
- Towson exploded off the jump of the game, when freshman Samantha Aljets scored 37 seconds into the action.
- Aljets goal was the only score for the next 25 minutes, as the Tigers held a 1-0 lead into the second period.
- Georgetown found a spot to create a scoring opportunity in the 25th minute, tying the game up to head into halftime.
- Hoyas' Cami Osborne scored again, nine minutes later and held onto that 2-1 lead until the 52nd minute.
- Georgia Beachley stepped just inside the circle to take a shot that was reviewed by the referees and confirmed as a goal, tying the game up with seven minutes remaining.
- Neither team saw the back of the net in the end of regulation and overtime began. Overtime is comprised of two 10-minute periods, if needed, and is a sudden vicotry situation.
- Seven players stepped on the field for each team, with Beachley starting the first overtime on the sideline from a green card.
- Towson drew a corner to start the overtime and nothing resulted of it, two minutes later Georgetown had a corner opportunity as well.
- Beachley was called for a green card again and one minute later the Hoyas were a woman down for a card as well.
- The road team saw the next opportunity to score on a corner in the 66th minute but did not score on it, as the score remained tied for the rest of the first overtime period.
- In the second overtime there was little action until the 75th minute when a penalty stroke was called for a Georgetown foul in the circle on Towson's possession.
- Beachley was selected for the attempt and the Hoyas subbed in their usual starting goalie.
- On the penalty shot, Beachley sent it lifting to the left as Ciara Weets dove and the ball soared past her gloves, taking the win.
Beyond the Box
- Georgia Beachley now leads the Tigers in goals scored with five on the season.
- The all-time series with Georgetown is tied 9-9, Towson hadn't defeated the Hoyas in the last three meetings dating back to 2016.
- Today's victory marks the second win ever at the TU Field Hockey Complex.
- With her fifth goal of the season, Beachley is tied for 10th in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in goals scored.
