Aljets Scores as Towson Falls to No. 11 Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - Friday night the Towson University field hockey team took on No. 11 Delaware on the road and fell in a 2-1 loss.

Freshman Samantha Aljets scored the single Tiger goal on an open look assisted by Mackenzie Tillman.

How it Happened
  • An uneventful first period with four total shots and four penalty corners resulted in a 0-0 score entering the second quarter.
  • The Blue Hens saw several more shots get off in the second but none hit the back of the net as rookie goalkeeper Tess Okkerse came up with four saves.
  • Two minutes into the second half, Delaware got on the board to take the lead. 
  • The home team wasted no time, earning corner after corner and scoring again in the 39th minute.
  • Delaware held the 2-0 lead into the beginning of the third. 
  • Towson continued to defend the goal, with five saves from Okkerse in the fourth as the Blue Hens took five corners. 
  • After a strong defensive stand the Tigers regained possession and moved the ball downfield.
  • Stepping inside the circle on the right side of the goalie, Mackenzie Tillman skirted the ball between a Delaware players feet to Samantha Aljets who was ready with an open look and sent the ball into the net. 
  • In the remaining 13 minutes of play, Delaware put together four corners and had six shots but the Towson defense and goalkeeping once again came up strong, outlasting the offensive attack.
Beyond the Box
  • Today's final score of 2-1 is the third time in the last seven meetings that Towson has held Delaware to a one-goal victory.
  • Aljets' goal is the first time the Tigers have scored in Newark since the 2009 season when Towson lost 6-5.
  • Aljets and Georgia Beachley are tied to lead the team in goals with five apiece. 
  • Okkerse's 13 saves today match her career-high previously set against American.
