TOWSON, Md. – Sunday afternoon the Towson University field hockey team hosted Temple in the final nonconference game of the season, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the home team.
Beira Ho led the way, scoring the first goal of the afternoon in the second period assisted by
Gretchen Alderfer on a penalty corner insert. This is Towson's second win in the last three games after defeating Georgetown last Sunday in overtime.
How it Happened
- The first period was slow with each team getting one shot off but neither finding the back of the net, ending scoreless at the end of the first 15.
- After an offensive attack in the circle, a foul on the Owls set up the Tigers for their first corner of the day.
- Jessica von Schmidt-Pauli inserted the corner and Gretchen Alderfer stopped the ball, passing it to Beira Ho who sent the shot to the right of the goalkeeper and scored the first goal.
- Ho's goal in the 19th minute secured the win as neither team saw the back of the net in the second half.
- The Owls had a total of three shots in the second half and two corners in the fourth quarter. One shot off the last corner for the road team went into the net but was called a no-goal for going to high in the circle.
- Towson continued to defend the circle with Okkerse coming up with two saves in the second half.
Beyond the Box
- This is Towson's first shutout since Oct. 30, 2011 against Northeastern. This is also the first time the Tigers have won at least three games since going 10-10 in 2011.
- This is the first career shutout for freshman goalkeeper Tess Okkerse.
- Today's goal is Beira Ho's second for the season, she has now scored two goals in each of her three seasons as a Tiger.
- Towson has scored 20 goals so far this season, the first time recording at least 20 since the 2012 season when the Black and Gold scored 21 on the year.
