Tigers Ride Momentum to Sweep at William & Mary

BOX SCORE WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- It was another strong performance from the Towson University women's volleyball team as the Tigers entered Kaplan Arena for a 3-0 decision against the College of William & Mary. A strong first and third sets led Towson to 25-16, 25-23 and 25-14 decision.

Towson (15-2, 5-0 CAA) won its ninth-straight match and continued its best start in league play since 2012. The Tigers hit for .320 in the match while siding out nearly 78 percent of the time. Towson logged two double-doubles, with Marrisa Wonders posting her seventh of the year on 38 assists and 12 digs while Annie Ertz had 10 kills and 10 digs. Emily Jarome led the match with 14 kills.

William & Mary (5-11, 1-4 CAA) left the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) match with a .167 hitting percentage with 12 attack errors. The Tribe did not have a player in double-digit kills but was paced by nine kills from Lauren Merrill. She added seven digs to her total.

How it Happened
  • Jarome opened the match serving eight straight points as the Tigers took an 8-1 lead in the first nine serves of the match, forcing the Tribe into a timeout. Jarome added a service ace to her ledger while Ertz and Lydia Wiers combined for a kill apiece with several William & Mary errors.
  • Both sides went back and forth as the Tigers slowly built out to a 20-14 lead. To that point, Towson had not put up a block but the Tigers needed to collect themselves to finish the first set.
  • Towson's timeout worked as the Black & Gold finished the set with a 5-2 run to take a one-set lead with a 25-15 decision. Jarome knocked down the final kill of the set as Towson won its ninth-straight set in league play.
  • Set number two was a tussle as the longtime foes tied at one, two, three and four before the Tribe took its first lead of the evening at 5-4 and eventually 6-4. Towson battled back after both sides traded points; the Tigers rattled off a 7-2 run for a 16-13 lead and a Tribe timeout.
  • With the second set tied 18-18, Towson strung together small bursts while holding William & Mary without consecutive points. Allen labeled a service ace for a 13th-straight match as Towson built out its lead. The Tribe battled back but the Tigers closed the door for a 25-23 set decision and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The third set was another back-and-forth frame early before Towson used small bursts to work out a multiple-point lead, including a four-point difference several times. True to character, it was a versatile frame for Towson as seven different players scored points into the Tigers' 18-12 lead.
  • After a William & Mary timeout, Towson finished the Tribe off with a 7-2 run that included points on an Ertz Ace, two Grassini kills and finishers from Jarome and Wiers for a 25-14 decision.
