Baseball Announces Challenging 2020 Slate, Including 25 Home Games

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team has released its 2020 schedule, a challenging slate taking the Tigers to Hawaii plus up and down the East Coast.

Towson is scheduled to play 56 games in seven different states, include 25 games at the friendly confines of John B. Schuerholz Park and a full Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) slate.  The seven states including the home state of Maryland and the program's first-ever trip to Hawaii.

The Tigers are entering the third season under head coach Matt Tyner.  In 2019, the Tigers earned CAA series victories over Hofstra and Delaware plus notched a road win against Big Ten opponent Penn State.  Towson returns its top two players in batting average and doubles and several pitchers in a staff that improved in ERA by 1.72 the previous year and struck out 380 batters, fourth-most in Towson single season history.

"With these non-conference opponents, we have done all we can to get our guys ready and prepared for the rigorous grind of the CAA," said Tyner. "We will need to play good, solid baseball.  It'll be a good test for us to see how we fare against these non-conference opponents.  We know once we get into the CAA what it takes to win there."

The season begins with three weekend road trips down south.  The Tigers begin the 2020 season in Norfolk, Virginia, taking on Old Dominion for a three-game series from Feb. 14-16, then next weekend, heading to North Carolina for a trio of games vs. High Point from Feb. 21-23.  From Feb. 28-Mar. 1, Towson challenges ACC powerhouse Miami, where Coach Tyner formerly played, for three games.

The next five games for Towson will be at Schuerholz, with the home opener being on Tuesday, Mar. 3rd vs. UMBC, followed by the first home series of the year against Lafayette from Mar. 6-8 with four games, a Saturday doubleheader among them.  After a mid-week battle against George Washington on Tuesday, Mar. 10th, Towson comes back home to take on America East runner-up Binghamton for four games from Mar. 13-15, including a Saturday doubleheader.

For the first time in program history, Towson will play baseball in Hawaii.  The Tigers play the Rainbow Warriors for a four-game series from Mar. 18-21.

The Black & Gold comes back for a four-game homestand, including the conference opener.  After a midweek matinee vs. George Mason on Mar. 25, the Towson-Delaware rivalry writes another chapter with three contests from Mar. 27-29.

Towson returns to the road for the next week, beginning with a mid-week matchup at Big Ten foe Penn State on March 31 then a league series at CAA opponent William & Mary from Apr. 3-5.  Following a rematch against George Washington at home on Apr. 7, the Tigers have four more road games, a series at defending CAA champion UNC Wilmington from Apr. 10-12, then a Tuesday game at UMBC on Apr. 14.

Back to Schuerholz comes Towson, hosting Coppin State on Apr. 15th, then bringing in Hofstra for a CAA series from Apr. 17-19.

The following five games will be away from campus, starting with a midweek affair at George Mason on Apr. 21 and following with a three-game series at Northeastern from Apr. 24-26 for league play.  On Wednesday, Apr. 29, Towson will play Penn State at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, the home of the Hagerstown Suns, minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

The first five games in May will be in the home state.  From May 1-3, Towson hosts James Madison for a three-game CAA series.  Towson travels down to College Park on May 5th for a game against the Big Ten member, then returns to Schuerholz to play Richmond on May 6th.

Towson concludes CAA play in the next two weekends, playing at Elon, the 2019 CAA regular season champion from May 8-10, then hosting Charleston at Schuerholz from May 15-17.
