Volleyball Rallies Past Hofstra in Road Battle

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- After dropping the first set, the Towson University women's volleyball team continued its run through the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with a 3-1 decision (21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21) on the road at Hofstra University.

The Tigers (20-2, 10- CAA) swept the Pride in the regular season since the 2011 season. The win gives Towson its 20th win of the season, the program's first 20-win season since going 27-6 overall in 2017.

Towson was paced by another versatile matinee effort, putting four players in double digits. Rookie of the Year candidate Lydia Wiers took over in the fourth set as she finished with 13 kills in the match. Olivia Finckel, Silvia Grassini and Emily Jarome all logged 11 kills. Marrisa Wonders had a busy afternoon with 49 assists and nine digs. Libero Camryn Allen extended her service ace streak to 18 matches as she finished with a career-best four.

Hofstra (14-9, 7-4 CAA) was led by Laura Masciullo, who had a match-best 23 kills on 58 swings. Ana Martinovic logged 11 kills as Luisa Sydlik had 32 assists. The Pride were limited to a .184 hitting percentage, including a combined 0.040 percentage in the third and fourth sets.

With the set tied, Towson put its foot on the gas and took a 16-11 lead with a 6-1 burst. Once again the Pride pulled back within one to make it 16-15 in favor of Towson, which held the Pride without consecutive points until late in the set. Hofstra fought off three Towson set points and made it 24-23 Tigers before Annie Ertz put down the final kill of the set for a 25-23 win and tying the match 1-1.
  • The third set opened in a similar fashion as the Tigers jumped out to a 5-2 lead before the Pride tied the frame 7-7 after a 5-2 run. Towson broke the stalemate with a 7-1 run to wrest control, 14-8. The Tigers held the Pride at bay, despite a 4-1 run as a triple block from Finckel, Ertz and Wiers decided the set 25-17. Towson took a 2-1 set lead heading into the fourth frame.
  • The fourth set saw both teams go on micro runs early as the lead changed hands seven times in the early going before Hofstra held an 18-14 lead.
