Bubel Scores Twice in First NCAA Field Hockey Game in State of Texas

HOUSTON, Texas - Thursday night the Towson University field hockey team was part of history, as the Tigers faced Miami (Ohio) in the first NCAA field hockey game ever played in the state of Texas.

Sophomore Kasey Bubel scored her first goal of the season and led Towson with two goals, as the RedHawks took the win 5-2.

High school and club field hockey has a following in the Lone Star State and student-athletes on both teams were greated by an entire team of youth club players to get autographs from afterwards.
How it Happened
  • Late in the first quarter, Miami scored twice. The RedHawks got on the board first in the 12th minute and scored in the final 50 seconds to take the lead into the next period.
  • In the 29th minute Miami scored again off a penalty corner and took the 3-0 into half.
  • The Tigers came out firing in the beginning of the third quarter.
  • Kasey Bubel received a pass from Nathalie Tortolero with space to shoot to the side of Miami's keeper, scoring the first-ever Towson goal in the state of Texas.
  • The RedHawks responded just one minute later, scoring on a corner as well.
  • Towson continued playing aggressively in the circle earning a corner with two seconds left on the clock.
  • Jessica von Schmidt-Pauli inserted the ball and Samantha Aljets got the first crack at it. When Miami's goalkeeper came up with the save, Bubel had an opportunity on the rebound and sent the ball in once again.
  • Entering the fourth, Towson trailed 4-2.
  • Corners for the RedHawks plagued the Tigers in the fourth. Miami had nine total penalty corners and capitalized on its 14th of the evening by scoring to take a 5-2 lead.
  • The Tigers defended three more RedHawk corners to end the game.
Beyond the Box
  • Freshman goalkeeper Tess Okkerse completed her third-straight game with at least six saves.
  • Kasey Bubel's two goals are a career-high, she scored once in her freshman season.
  • The Tigers have scored 12 goals through 10 games, more than scored through 10 games in each of the last three seasons.
