Volleyball Closes Out League Play Unbeaten

TOWSON, Md. -- For the first time ever, a team went 16-0 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play as the Towson University women's volleyball team handled its business for a 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-18) win on Senior Day win at SECU Arena over William & Mary.

The 2019 Tigers became just the third team in CAA history to go unbeaten through the regular season since the turn of the century, joining the 2003 Towson (14-0) and 2012 Towson (12-0) squads. With the 16-0 mark, the Tigers will be the number one seed in next week's CAA Tournament, hosted by Hofstra University.

Towson (26-2, 16-0) won its 20th-straight match, setting a program record. The previous mark was 19 straight during the 2003 season. The Tigers continued to spread the ball as seniors Silvia Grassini, Annie Ertz and Olivia Finckel posted 11 kills apiece. Senior setter Marrisa Wonders, whose sister Malloy surprised the crowd with the singing of the national anthem, logged 44 assists in her final match at SECU Arena. She added 19 digs for another double-double, her 14th of the season.

William & Mary (7-20, 3-12 CAA) was backed by 21 kills from Kate Dedrick, who hit at a .362 percent clip. Senior setter Autumn Brenner, who was recognized by the Tiger staff before the match, posted 38 assists. Lauren Merrill and Anna Porter had 11 digs apiece.

How it Happened
  • Towson was out of sync early in the match, falling behind 5-2 early. The Tigers battled back to deadlock the set at 7-7 but a 4-1 burst from the visiting Tribe put William & Mary up 11-8. The Tribe extended its lead to 14-9 but four kills in a five-point swing for the Tigers tied the match once again at 14-14.
  • William & Mary held a 23-19 lead before the Tigers trimmed it back to 24-22, but the rally was too little, too late as the Tribe won 25-22, the first set William & Mary took off the Tigers since the 2015 season.
  • Set two was all Towson early as the Tigers jumped out to a 7-2 lead with a healthy combination of kills from Ertz, Finckel and Wonders, paired with William & Mary miscues. Towson kept its foot on the gas and went up 15-5 with Grassini serving seven-straight points, including an ace.
  • William & Mary battled back, pulling  within 15-8 of the Tigers.
  • Towson responded with a 4-0 burst to run the lead back to 11, up 19-8. The Tigers did not allow the Tribe to connect points the rest of the way as Towson finished with a 4-1 run for the 25-13 decision and tying the match 1-1.
  • The third set was another battle early as the teams tied seven times before either side hit 10 points. Down 8-7, Towson put down three straight for an 11-8 advantage with a 4-0 run, bookended by kills from Finckel.
  • Later in the third, the Tigers strung together a 5-1 run for an 18-13 lead with kills from Emily Jarome and Nikiya Mitchell. The Tribe never got back within two of the Tigers as Towson closed the frame with another 5-1 run, capped by a block from Grassini and Ertz.
  • The fourth set was another tight affair as the frame was tied at five, six, seven and eight. Towson grabbed a two-point, 11-9 lead but the Tribe once again tied things at 11-11 before Towson cracked open the frame with a 4-1 burst that was aided by three-straight blocks with a combination of Mitchell, Finckel and Ertz for a 16-12 lead. The Tigers grew the gap out to 19-13, finalized by yet another ace from Camryn Allen, her 24th straight match with an ace.
  • The final point of the match was a block from Mitchell and senior Finckel for the 25-18 decision.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson's versatility was again on display with 11 kills apiece from Grassini, Ertz and Finckel, all playing their final match at SECU Arena. As a team, Towson hit for .217, backed by a .429 percentage from Grassini and a .333 from Mitchell, who made her second-straight start.
  • Jarome overcame a slow start and finished with nine kills while Mitchell reset her career best with eight kills.
  • The Tigers blocked much better in the second match against the Tribe; on Sunday Towson had 15 total blocks after having just one during the match in Williamsburg.
  • Four Tigers had double digit digs, led by Wonders' 19. Freshman Asia Goins had 15 while Ertz and Allen contributed a dozen apiece.
  • Wonders led the match with 44 assists while also pacing Towson with a pair of aces. Allen added an ace in the fourth set, extending her streak to 24 straight matches with a service ace. Seniors Grassini and Catie Chervenak had an ace apiece as well.
  • Towson has now won 20 straight matches this season, dating back to September. The Tigers capped the 2019 regular season with a 12-1 record at SECU Arena while the senior class won its 94th match at Towson.
  • The Tigers played just 96 total sets this season, the fewest number of sets played in the regular season for Towson since joining the CAA for the 2002 season. The previous mark was 98 during the 2012 season.
  • Dating back to last season, the Tigers have now won 21 straight CAA matches, including all 16 this season. Towson is the first program in league history to go 16-0.
  • The Tigers have won 12 straight over the Tribe, dating back to the 2014 season. This is the sixth-straight season the Tigers have swept William & Mary during the regular season. Towson leads the all-time series 25-18.
