Balanced Attack Sends Towson to CAA Title Match

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Behind a versatile attack, the top-seeded Towson University women's volleyball team stormed past No. 5 Elon in four sets (19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19) Saturday afternoon, sending the Tigers to their first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship match since 2005.

The Tigers (27-2) extended their program-best winning streak to 21, aided by four players in double-digit kills. All-CAA Second Teamer Emily Jarome bounced back with 18 kills and a .325 hitting percentage while CAA Rookie of the Year Lydia Wiers knocked down a dozen kills at a .409 clip. All-CAA First Team selection Olivia Finckel had 14 kills as Annie Ertz posted 11 alongside 16 digs for her eight double-double.

CAA Player and Setter of the Year Marrisa Wonders put up 52 assists with 11 assists for her 15th double-double of 2019. Junior libero Camryn Allen not only had a match-high 22 digs, but extended her ace streak to 25 consecutive matches with an ace.

Elon (13-18) had a pair in double digits as Leah Daniel finished with 16 kills while Kellyn Trowse had 10. It was a near-even split for the Phoenix setters with Haylie Clark putting up 19 while Kodi Garcia finished with 18. Jordan Gower had a team-best 15 digs.

How it Happened
  • It was a slow start to the day for the Tigers, who fell behind 10-3 early in the first set. Later in the frame, Towson made it interesting with a 6-2 run to make it 20-18 but the Phoenix put together a 5-1 run down the stretch for a 25-19 decision. It was just the fifth time this season Towson dropped the opening set.
  • The second set was a back-and-forth battle early as the teams tied at one, two, three, four, five, six and seven. Deadlocked 7-7, Towson ripped open the set with a 7-2 run to grab a 14-9 lead. The Tigers had three blocks in the run, including a solo stuff from Ertz, while Jarome, Wiers and Finckel all knocked down kills.
  • Elon fought back and pulled within two of the Tigers' lead at 17-15 Towson before the Tigers pulled together a 7-1 run for a 24-17 advantage, aided by more blocking and a spread of attackers.
  • Towson capped the second set on a 3-1 burst, finished by a Finckel kill, for a 25-18 decision and tying the match at one set apiece.
  • The Tigers jumped out early in the third set, taking a 4-1 lead. After a 9-5 advantage for Towson, the Phoenix battled to a one-point set at 9-8. Towson put down five straight points, including four kills, to regain a 14-8 lead. Towson continued the run out to 18-9 with another three kills from Ertz, Finckel and Jarome with a block from Wiers and Finckel.
  • Elon scored four straight to make it 18-13, but those would be the final consecutive points for the Phoenix in the set as Towson ran it out to a 25-17 decision behind a 5-2 run.
  • Set four was another hot start for the Tigers as they went up 13-7, capped by another ace from Allen. Elon pulled back to 16-14 but the Tigers bounced back with a 4-1 burst and a 20-15 lead. Another four unanswered points from the Tigers put Towson at match point, 24-17. Elon scored twice more before Wiers hammered down the final point of the match for a 25-19 score.
Behind the Numbers
  • It was another four players in double digit kills for Towson, led by 18 from Jarome, 14 from Finckel. Wiers and Ertz finished with 12 and 11, respectively.
  • Wonders ran the offense with 52 assists, her sixth match this season with at least 50 kills. Of those six matches, only one went to five sets.
  • Like the attack, Towson's defense was versatile as well, backed by 22 digs from Allen and 16 from Ertz, completing the double. Wonders added another 11 digs as well. Five Tigers were credited with blocks, including five assisted stops each for Grassini and Finckel. Wiers added three as Jarome and Ertz each had a pair.
  • Towson hit for .319 in the match, overcoming a slow start with a .182 in the first set. Towson hit at .436 in the third set.
