PERFECTION: Towson Volleyball Wins 2019 CAA Tournament

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Towson University women's volleyball team completed the perfect Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) season as the top-seeded Tigers swept No. 2 James Madison in the 2019 CAA Championship match (25-23, 25-17, 25-18) at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center on the campus of Hofstra University.

Towson (28-2) has won its last 22 matches while going unbeaten in 2019 against CAA opponents, sweeping the regular season at 16-0 followed by two wins in the CAA Championship Tournament. The 2019 Tigers are first team to run the table in the conference since the 1996 season.

The Tigers earned the CAA's automatic qualifying berth to the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The first round of the NCAA Tournament is scheduled for Dec. 5-7. Selection Sunday will be on Dec. 1 at 8:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

Senior opposite hitter Olivia Finckel and sophomore outside hitter Emily Jarome were selected to the CAA All-Tournament Team while 2019 CAA Player and Setter of the Year Marrisa Wonders was tabbed as the Most Outstanding Player for the Tournament.

Towson was led by 14 kills from Finckel while Jarome knocked down a dozen. The former hit at a .357 percent rate while the latter swung .300. Wonders ran the Tigers' spread offense to perfection with 35 assists and 13 digs for her 15th double-double of the year. Camryn Allen had a team second-best nine digs. The Tigers victimized the James Madison receive pattern for eight service aces, including three from Silvia Grassini, who added four blocks to her line.

The Tigers limited the Dukes to a .139 hitting percentage behind seven blocks. Towson combined for a .235 hitting percentage despite 11 JMU blocks.

The Dukes were led by 11 kills from Briley Brind'Amour and M'Kaela White. Sophia Davis added eight blocks while Brind'Amour finished with three.

How it Happened
  • Towson was feeling it early as the Tigers jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first set in a run that included three blocks from Finckel, Grassini, Lydia Wiers and Annie Ertz. Towson continued to pound the ball out to a 12-6 lead before the Dukes scored three straight to cut the lead to three.
  • The Tigers extended it back out to 17-11 with a 5-2 push.
  • Later in the set, things tightened up as the Dukes deadlocked the frame at 21-21. Towson broke a 22-22 tie with back-to-back points from Jarome and Wiers, who then scored the deciding point for a 25-23 score.
  • Another hot start lead Towson out to a 6-3 lead. The Tigers then went up 15-10, keeping the Dukes at bay until a 3-0 run made it 19-17 Towson. Holding a two-point lead, the Tigers snapped off six unanswered points from four sources for a 25-17 decision in set two.
  • The third set was streaky early as Towson went up 3-0 before the Dukes ran off a 6-1 run for a 6-4 lead. Towson put together a 4-0 run to regain an 8-6 advantage with two Finckel kills and two blocks from WIers and Ertz.
  • Tied 12-12, Towson reeled off an 8-2 run for a 17-13 lead and an advantage it wouldn't surrender the rest of the way and wrested a 20-14 lead. Keeping the Dukes from connecting points, the two sides traded points until Towson got back-to-back points to seal the win, including a pounding kill from Jarome to secure the Tigers' first NCAA Tournament berth since 2004.
