Nukiya Mayo Scores 1,000th Point in Loss to Iowa

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Thursday the Towson University women's basketball team faced Iowa in its first game of the Puerto Rico Clasicó ending in a 100-72 loss.
 
The Tigers were led by Nukiya Mayo with 22 points. Sophomore Myasia Jones dropped 14 and Kionna Jeter scored 12. Q. Murray led the Tigers on the glass with eight rebounds and she also had four assists.
 
Highlighting the afternoon was a career moment for Mayo who scored her 1,000th point on a three-point bucket in the third quarter.
 
How it Happened

  • The first quarter was a dog fight. Towson took the first lead 3-0 and the Hawkeyes responded. Back and forth scoring ensued in the first, ending 19-12 after the first 10 minutes, Iowa ahead.
  • The Hawkeyes continued strong shooting from the field on a 40 percent field goal clip, taking an 11-point lead into the locker room at half.
  • On the other side of the halftime break the Tigers were shooting much better, 100 percent from three and from the free throw line.
  • Mayo scored her 1,000th point before the third quarter media timeout, Towson trailed by eight then with 6:28 to go.
  • Coming out of the media timeout Ryan Holder made two free throws and cut the lead to six, that was the closest the Tigers came to tying the game up again.
  • At the end of the third Iowa was leading by 16. In the final 5:17 the Hawkeyes scored 12 points to reach the 100-point mark and seal the game.
 
Beyond the Box
  • Nukiya Mayo is the first player under head coach Diane Richardson to reach 1,000 points. Thursday was the fifth game this year she has scored in double figures.
  • Mayo joins the Tiger 1,000-point club as the 17th member. The last player to score 1,000 points at Towson was Dominique Johnson who earned her spot in 2016.
  • Myasia Jones has scored in double figures the last four straight games starting against San Diego two weeks ago.
  • Kionna Jeter recorded her eighth-consecutive game with 10 or more points dating back to last March in the CAA title game.
