Volleyball Completes Weekend With Sweep of Delaware

TOWSON, Md. -- It was another 2-0 week for the Towson University women's volleyball team as the Tigers remained unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action with a clean 3-0 sweep over longtime rival Delaware (25-20, 25-21, 25-17).

Towson (22-2, 12-0 CAA) won its 17th straight league match dating back to last season while extending its 2019 winning streak to 16, the longest run since opening 2017 with a 16-0 mark. The Tigers have swept the Blue Hens in the last five meetings.

The Tigers were led by senior right side hitter Olivia Finckel, who batted down 15 kills while hitting .448 for the afternoon at SECU Arena. Sophomore outside hitter and Wilmington, Delaware native Emily Jarome had a dozen kills at a .292 clip. Senior setter Marrisa Wonders logged another 41 assist to improve her per-set average this season. Camryn Allen had 15 digs with two service aces, extending her ace-scoring streak to 20 matches.

Delaware (12-11, 4-8 CAA) had 15 kills from Maria Bellinger, who took 35 swings and had just one error. Bailey Pearlman was second the Blue Hens with eight kills. Rookie setter Ezgi Basaranlar had 29 helpers while libero Andie Hanus had 13 digs.

How it Happened
  • Familiarity breeds contempt as the two sides, playing for the 82nd time in series history and that was evident early as the teams tied six times before Delaware pulled away for a 10-8 lead. Trailing 11-9, Towson ripped off four straight, including two kills from Silvia Grassini and another from Finckel, for a 13-11 lead.
  • The Tigers continued to build their lead, putting together another 4-0 run with kills from Jarome and Grassini and an Annie Ertz ace for a 19-14 advantage. Towson's defense prevented the Hens from stringing together points before the Tigers closed the set 25-20 on a Grassini kill.
  • Delaware opened the second set with a 7-4 lead and eventually a 9-5 lead, catching the Tigers out of system several times. Out of a timeout and trailing 18-13, Towson unleashed a 9-1 run and regained a 22-19 lead. The run included a pair of blocks while four different Tigers posted kills. Towson closed out set two on a 3-1 burst for a 25-21 decision.
  • Set three was all Towson early on as the Tigers roared out to a 7-1 lead before a Delaware timeout. Out of the pause, a Blue Hen service error gave Towson an 8-1 advantage, but Delaware responded back with a 5-0 burst, back within two of Towson's 8-6 lead.
  • Again, Towson strung together multiple points on a 6-1 run, taking a 15-7 lead. After both sides traded points, the Tigers gained a nine-point advantage, out to 20-11. Towson prevented Delaware from stringing together more than two points the rest of the way and picked up the sweep with a 25-17 decision on a final kill from Jarome.
Behind the Numbers
  • Finckel had a game-high tying 15 kills while Jarome finished with 12, second-most in the match.
  • Three of Towson's regular attackers hit over 40 percent, led by Grassini at .450 with nine kills on 20 swings with zero errors. Finckel finished second with a .448 hitting percentage while Rookie of the Year candidate Lidya Wiers hit .429 with four kills on seven swings with just one error.
  • Towson's blockade was in force again as the team finished with 7.5 blocks, paced by five assisted stuffs from Grassini. Ertz added four block assists to her ledger while Wonders posted three.
  • Wonders notched another 41 assists, bringing her weekend total to 91 after logging 50 on Friday against James Madison.
  • Allen finished with a match-best 15 digs while adding two service aces to her line. The junior libero has now served at least one service ace in each of the Tigers' last 20 matches.
  • Towson is now 12-0 in league play, its best run to open conference action since going 12-0 in 2012. The Tigers are two wins shy of tying the program's CAA record to start a season. Towson went 14-0 in league play during the 2003 campaign.
  • The Tigers have now won 17 straight league matches dating back to the end of the 2018 campaign.
  • Towson has swept the Blue Hens in the last five meetings while improving to 43-39 all-time against Delaware. It was Towson's sixth-straight win over the Blue Hens and the third-straight year the Tigers have swept the regular season series.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers head south for their next two matches.

  • The Tigers then head up the coast for a Sunday showdown at UNCW. That match is set for a 1 p.m. start at Hanover Hall.
