Volleyball Secures Top Seed in Battle at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In a back-and-forth evening at TD Arena, the Towson University women's volleyball team locked up the number one seed in the forthcoming Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament behind a 3-1 win over the College of Charleston.

Towson extended its winning streak to 17 matches while also securing the number one seed for the CAA Tournament. With the win, Towson locked in at least a share of the regular season championship. The Tigers need just one more win the rest of the regular season for the outright title and the right to host the 2020 CAA Tournament.

The Tigers (23-2, 13-0 CAA) had another versatile night as four players hit double digits in kills. Rookie of the Year candidate Lydia Wiers and senior right side Olivia Finckel batted down 14 kills apiece. Silvia Grassini and Annie Ertz posted 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Senior setter Marrisa Wonders pushed up 56 assists, one shy of her career best, while completing her 12th double-double of the year with 13 digs. Camryn Allen led Towson with 21 digs and one of the Tigers four service aces.

Charleston (6-19, 3-10 CAA) was led by 15 kills from Lauren Freed while Mandy Napierala finished with 10. Brooke Harris led the setting duties with 22 while Tori Carpenter added 18. Libero Logan Manusky had a 26-dig night.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped on the Cougars early as the Tigers held a 6-2 advantage just eight points into the set. Charleston pulled back to within a point at 7-6 but a 6-0 run for the Towson, thanks to kills from four separate sources, gave Towson a 13-6 lead.
  • Both sides traded points through the middle portion of the frame until the Tigers notched a 6-2 run for the 25-16 decision. Towson's run was aided by several Charleston errors.
  • The second set was back and forth early and throughout as both sides tied eight times with one lead change. Late in the extended frame, Charleston went on a 9-3 run to grab a 22-17 lead. Towson battled back to tie the set 24-24 with a 7-2 burst but the Cougars scored three of the final four points for a 27-25 set win.
  • After going down 2-0 early, the remainder of the third set was all Towson early as the Tigers roared out to an 8-3 lead before Charleston called timeout. Out of the break, Towson continued as Allen dropped in an ace for the 21st straight match. Behind stout defense and solid passing, Towson built a 21-7 lead while keeping the Cougars without consecutive points.
  • Charleston went on a 3-0 run to trim Towson's lead down to 21-10 but the Tigers got three of the final four points for a 25-12 decision and a 2-1 set lead.
  • The fourth set was another extended point battle with four ties and two lead changes.
  • Towson wrested a 10-6 lead on a 4-2 burst with kills from Ertz, Grassini, Jarome and Finckel. The Tigers kept Charleston at a three-point distance until late in the set. Towson held a 24-21 but the Cougars scored four straight points to take a 25-24 lead, looking to push things to five sets.
  • A kill from Grassini deadlocked the action before a Charleston error put Towson up 26-25. Sitting on match point, Jarome overcame a tough night swinging and scored the final point with a kill and a 27-25 win in the fourth.
