Volleyball Secures Regular Season Title

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Towson University women's volleyball team kept the winning streak alive while locking up the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Regular Season Championship, taking down UNCW 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-16) at Hanover Hall.

As the regular season champions, the Tigers earned the right to host the 2020 CAA Tournament at SECU Arena, while also locking in the number one seed for this year's league tournament at Hofstra on Nov. 22-24.

The Tigers (24-2, 14-0 CAA) hit for .293 in the match with three players in double-digit kills. Olivia Finckel led the day with 17 while Rookie of the Year Candidate Lydia Wiers posted 16 while hitting .414. Emily Jarome bounced back with 15 kills. Marrisa Wonders logged her 13th double-double of the year with 53 assists and a match-best 21 digs. Camryn Allen logged 16 digs while extending her service ace streak to 22 matches.

UNCW (14-14, 4-11) was led by 12 kills from Jaime Thomas and another 10 from Kendall Bender. The Seahawks had 13.5 team blocks, led by eight block assists from Bender, who also had the match's only solo stuff.

How it Happened
  • The opening set of the match was back-and-forth the entire way, including early with six ties before it was deadlocked at 14-14. UNCW went on a 4-1 run to grab an 18-15 lead before Towson called timeout.
  • Out of the pause, the Tigers strung together a 4-0 run that included kills from Finckel and Wiers while the pair combined for a block for a 19-18 lead. UNCW surged back and did not allow Towson consecutive points before taking a 25-23 decision. It was just the second time this season Towson dropped the opening set.
  • Set two was all Towson early as the Tigers ripped out to a 17-8 lead. The Tigers broke open a 5-4 lead with a 12-4 run.
  • UNCW battled back into the second set, trimming Towson's lead down to 20-14 but the Tigers cracked off a 5-0 run with two Jarome kills and a Finckel finish for a 25-14 set score, deadlocking the match 1-1.
  • The Tigers continued the momentum into the start of the third set with a 4-0 opening burst with three Wiers kills and one from Ertz. Once again, the Seahawks fought back into the set and capitalized on Tiger errors to make it 6-4. Towson put in separation behind a 4-1 burst to grab a 10-5 advantage with kills from Grassini, Wiers and Ertz in the run.
  • UNCW put down an 11-2 run to grab a 16-12 lead before the Tigers got back-to-back points from an Ertz and Wiers block followed by a Finckel kill to make it 16-14 for the hosts.
  • Trailing 23-19 in the set, Towson stormed back with an 8-2 run with four Tigers scoring kills in the burst for a 27-25 set decision and a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Like the second set, the Tigers ripped out to a 7-2 lead early in the fourth before a UNCW timeout. Allen extended her ace streak to 22 with one during the fourth set opening flourish.
  • Towson kept its foot on the gas and extended the lead to 19-12 before the Tigers called timeout to talk about finishing the set. Out of the pause, Marija Tomasevic drilled an ace that set up a 6-3 burst to give Towson the road win, 25-16.
