Career Nights Lead Volleyball to Sweep Over Elon

BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. -- Behind several career-best evenings, the Towson University women's volleyball program picked up its 19th straight win with a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-12) win over visiting Elon University Friday night at SECU Arena.

With the victory, the Tigers tied the program record for consecutive wins, pulling even with the 2003 squad that also reeled off 19 straight. Dating back to last season, Towson has won 20-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) matches.

Towson (25-2, 15-0 CAA) flexed its depth with several reserves scoring career bests. Sophomore Marija Tomasevic had a career-best six kills while senior right side Olivia Finckel led the match with 13 kills. Redshirt sophomore Nikiya Mitchell made her first career start at Towson, posting three kills and three blocks. Senior Annie Ertz drilled down 10 kills as Marrisa Wonders notched 39 assists. Freshman Asia Goins grabbed a career-best 17 digs, a match-high, while Camryn Allen had 11 digs while extending her service ace streak to 23 matches.

Elon (13-17, 7-9 CAA) was led by 11 kills from Leah Daniel with Kellyn Trowse finishing second with seven. Isabella Seman led the Phoenix with 11 digs. Elon was limited to a .121 hitting percentage against the Tigers.

How it Happened
  • The first set was back-and-forth early. Towson jumped up 7-4 but the Phoenix rallied back for a 9-8 advantage. After both sides traded blows, Towson ripped off six-straight points to turn a 12-10 deficit into a 16-12 lead.
  • Elon tied the frame at 17 before another quick 3-0 Tiger burst put the homeside up 20-17. Twice more the Phoenix made it a one-point set but Towson got the final four points, with two kills from Mitchell and another pair from Emily Jarome for a 25-20 decision.
  • Towson jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the second set, finishing the run with Allen's aforementioned ace. Trailing 9-5, Elon scored a 6-1 run to take its first lead since the opening point of the second set at 11-10. Later Towson responded with a 5-1 run of its own, getting kills from Finckel and Ertz combined with Elon errors, to take a 17-15 lead.
  • The Tigers built up to a 21-17 lead before the Phoenix rallied back to tie the frame 24-24, including three straight points from Daniel. Finckel and Ertz combined for the final two points of the set for a narrow 26-24 decision.
  • After playing two tight sets to open the match, Towson put its collective foot on the gas to open the third frame with an 11-3 lead, including eight-straight points that bridged an Elon timeout. Four different Tigers scored kills to open the set, including three from Silvia Grassini.
  • Towson continued to hit at an efficient rate, going off for a .500 in the third set, taking an 18-10 lead before Elon called its second timeout of the set. The break did little to halt the Tigers' momentum as Towson finished the match with a 7-2 run for a 25-12 set score a 3-0 count on the board.
Behind the Numbers
  • Three Tigers logged career highs in the match as Mitchell posted three kills with three block assists. Tomasevic added six kills, four digs and one block assist, all besting or tying previously established career bests. Goins added 17 kills to her solid rookie campaign, surpassing her previous best of 16 logged last weekend at Charleston.
  • Finckel led the match with 13 kills, committing just one error on 25 swings for a .480 hitting percentage. Ertz added 10 kills and a .280 hitting percentage.
  • Towson finished with six team blocks, led by three block assists each from Finckel, Grassini and Mitchell. The Tigers' net defense and 55 digs limited the Phoenix to a .121 hitting percentage.
  • Allen added 11 digs and one service ace, extending her ace streak to 23 straight matches.
  • As a team, Towson hit at a .264 rate, aided by a .500 percentage in the third set, scoring 15 kills on 28 swings with just one error.
  • Towson has now won 19 straight matches, tying the school record with the 2003 campaign. The Tigers have won their last 20 league matches dating back to last season. Towson is currently 15-0 in league play this season.
  • Towson has won its last 13 matches against Elon while completing the regular season sweep for a sixth-straight campaign.
  • Friday night's win was the 93rd for the current crop of seniors, a number that ranks as the seventh-most in program history for a four-year senior class.
  • With her seven kills, Grassini became the fifth Tiger to surpass the 200 kill mark this season. She is joined by Emily Jarome (283), Finckel (271), Ertz (232) and Lydia Wiers (231). With her three block assists, Grassini raised her career total to 315, tying her with Candace Steadman (2012-16) for the third-most for a player whose entire Towson career was played in the 25-point rally scoring era.
  • Friday night's announced attendance was 557, the third-most for a Towson volleyball match at SECU Arena.
