Tigers Bounce Back Over UNCW

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team hosted its annual Pink Game on Friday night at SECU Arena against UNCW, which ended in a win, final score of 82-61.
 
The Tigers were led by Kionna Jeter with 22 points and Nukiya Mayo with 17 points. Mayo led the team in rebounds with nine while Janeen Camp and Maia Lee each grabbed eight.
 
Towson improves to 14-9 on the year, 8-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) while the Seahawks move to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in the CAA. The two teams are now tied for third in the conference, Sunday will be an opportunity for both teams to break the tie.
 
How it Happened
  • Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter scored the first bucket of the night and the home team rolled out to a 6-1 lead early. By the first media timeout the Tigers led 8-3 with 4:24 left in the first.
  • A few trips to the free throw line put the Seahawks within reach of closing the gap, but Towson ended with a 12-9 lead at the end of the first.
  • The second quarter was back-and-forth as UNCW climbed back into the game, tying it up 24-24 with 1:58 to go in the half. Towson led by as many as six points in the second but the Seahawks scored 15 points to the home team's 19.
  • In the final two minutes Jeter scored three buckets and made a free throw to give the Tigers a cushion, as Nukiya Mayo capped the end of the half with a jumper. Towson entered the half leading 31-24.
  • Jeter with a steal and bucket to open the second half. Two trips to the foul line and the Seahawks were three points away from tying it up with 7:50 to go in the second.
  • At the five minute mark, the Tigers embarked on a 13-2 run and would end the third leading 55-41.
  • Entering the fourth quarter UNCW made a layup to cut the lead to 12 but Towson responded with five unanswered points and extended the lead to 18 with seven minutes to go.
  • The Tigers didn't let off the gas, scoring 18 more points in the remaining minutes and reaching a peak lead of 23 points with 1:49 to go.
Beyond the Box
  • Friday's win saw another 20-point performance from Kionna Jeter, her 11th of the season. The guard shot 52 percent from the field and had six rebounds and two steals.
  • Jeter now has 66 steals on the season, 16 away from entering the program's top-10 in single season steals.
  • With 436 points so far, the Spartanburg, South Carolina Native is 43 points away from entering the top-10 single season points group.
  • Nukiya Mayo scored in double figures for the 17th time this season. Since December 22 at Marshall, Mayo has scored at least 10 points. She was one rebound away from a double-double.
  • Friday was the first night Towson had 50 or more rebounds since January 25 against Elon (52). The Tigers are averaging 43.3 per game.
  • Freshman Janeen Camp had a stellar night with 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes. Camp shot 44 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line.
  • Camp's 11 points matches her career-high, she has scored 11 points in three games this season.
Looking Ahead
Towson hosts the College of Charleston on Sunday at 2 p.m., it is the annual Autism Awareness Game with a blue t-shirt giveaway for all fans.
