Towson Closes Regular Season Against Elon

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball team concludes its 2018-19 regular season by hosting Elon. The Tigers will also celebrate the careers of seniors Alex Thomas and Jordan McNeil.

Opening Tip
  • This is this first time since 2015 that Towson will play its final regular season at home.
  • Eight of Towson's losses have been by six points or fewer. And two more have been in double overtime.
 
Towson's CAA Tournament Scenarios
  • Currently Towson is 6-11 in the CAA and tied for 7th in the standings with James Madison and Elon. The Tigers can finish anywhere from sixth to 10th.
  • The Tigers will be the No. 6 seed with a win AND a Drexel loss AND a James Madison loss.
  • The Tigers will be the No. 7 seed with a win AND a Drexel loss AND a James Madison win.

Today's Promotion
  • It will be senior day as Towson honors and celebrates the careers of McNeil and Thomas.
  • In addition, the Tigers will host their third annual recognition celebration to honor their Black Student-Athlete Hall-of-Fame members.
  • There will be a pre-game event in the Multi-Purpose Room with the Hall of Famers, current student-athletes and members of the Towson Black Alumni Alliance.
  • The following Hall of Famers will be back and honored at halftime: Wendell Thomas (lacrosse, 1989 inductee), Carl Perkins (football, 1991), Norma Kelly (basketball, 1996), Don Washington (football, 1998), Chuck Lightening (basketball, 2003) and P.D. Moore (football, 2018).
  • Also, it's men's basketball alumni day. There will be a pregame ceremony for the alumni.  
  • The pre-game national anthem will be sung by Towson Melodies.
  • University Village will sponsor a halfcourt shot for a chance to win a nice sum of money and a lucky student will have a chance to win a Fire.
 
Towson Update
  • Lost to William & Mary, 67-65, on Thursday.
  • Brian Fobbs scored a game-high 22 points with six boards against W&M.
  • He has eight 20-point outings in the last 12 games and 25 double-digit efforts in the past 26 contests.
  • Fobbs is fourth in the CAA in scoring (19.3 ppg) and 12th in rebounds (6.1rpg) in conference play.
  • Dennis Tunstall had his first double-double of the year at Hofstra with 11 points and 10 boards. He's 8th in the CAA with 7.7 rpg.
  • Allen Betrand has 12 assists to one turnover during Towson's last four games.
  • Betrand, who had six rebounds against W&M, matched his career-high with 11 points on 5-of-8 FG shooting at NU last week. He added five rebounds and a career best four assists.
  • Towson held W&M to 42.9% FG shooting and has kept seven of its last eight foes under 45%. TU tops the CAA in FG% defense in league play.
  • Sanders and Tunstall became the first Tigers to record double-doubles in the same game since Arnauld William Adala Moto and John Davis did it against Morgan State on Nov. 15, 2016.
  • Tobias Howard has reached double figures in seven of the last eight contests after scoring 13 points against William & Mary.
  • Jakigh Dottin handed out a career best seven assists in a career best 38 minutes against Hofstra.
  • Towson leads the CAA in field goal percentage defense (42.9), rebounding (37.3), rebounding margin (+5.1) and offensive rebounding (12.3).
 
A Look At Elon
  • Tyler Seibring ranks sixth on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,764 career-points and is 35 points away from entering the top-5 all-time.
  • Steven Santa Ana is 18th all-time in program history in scoring with 1,349 career-points and needs 32 more to move into 17th.
  • With its 73-58 victory over JMU on Thursday, Elon completes the regular season sweep of James Madison and narrows the all-time series deficit to 7-4.
  • The Phoenix has swept two CAA teams during the regular season with two victories against UNCW and now James Madison.
  • Elon has won two of its last three games.
  • The Phoenix had three players score in double figures in its win over JMU, led by Steven Santa Ana's game-high 20 points along team-highs of nine rebounds and seven assists.
  • Tyler Seibring added 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range, while Sheldon Eberhardt chipped in 15 points off the bench for the Phoenix.
  • Elon ranks in the top five of the CAA in field goal percentage defense (44.9 percent, third), defensive rebounding (25.4, tied for second) and assists (14.4, fourth).
 
The First Meeting
  • Towson rode a 53-point second half performance to defeat Elon 77-60 in its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener on Dec. 28, 2018.
  • Juniors Tobias Howard Jr. and Brian Fobbs with 21 points each. Fobbs added seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Senior Alex Thomas scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including the first 3-pointers of Thomas' career.
  • Towson recorded assists on 13 of its 16 baskets in the second half. The Tigers shot 64 percent (16-for-25) after intermission. Thomas, Howard and Fobbs outscored Elon, 41-33, in the second half.
  • Steven Santa Ana led the Phoenix with 21 points. Tyler Seibring scored 12 points and Chuck Hannah added 11 points.
 
Perfection When It Comes to Graduation
  • Towson has a perfect men's basketball graduation rate under head coach Pat Skerry.
  • The Tigers are 21-for-21.
 
Towson In the Community
  • Towson is the Division I national champion of the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Competition for the Fall 2018 semester. Towson completed the most community service hours among all schools in the competition, including 75 different Division I departments and approximately 300 total programs across the country.
  • The Towson men's basketball team has been active in the community since returning to campus in August. Members of the team spoke at Loch Raven Academy, participated in Towson West Elementary School's Back To School Night and the Autism Speaks Walk.
  • In addition to the athletic and academic success, the Tigers ranked first nationally in Division I men's team sports for their community service activities in the 2017 NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Community Service Competition.
  • Towson hosted its annual autism clinic on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in conjunction with the Hussman Center and the women's basketball program.

  • All-session ticket books for the 2019 CAA Men's Basketball Championship go on sale Thursday, January 10 through TicketMaster (1-800-745-3000), TicketMaster.com and the North Charleston Coliseum Advance Ticket office.
  • The CAA's premier event returns to the Lowcountry on March 9-12, 2019 as the North Charleston (S.C.) Coliseum hosts nine games over four days, with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.
  • Ticket books, which provide admission to all games of the tournament, can be purchased for as little as $80.
