Five Tigers Earn Multiple Hits in Baseball Defeat at GW

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Towson University baseball team (1-11) earned 14 hits, with five Tigers having multi-hit performances, but fell in a mid-week battle at George Washington (8-6) 13-8 on Tuesday afternoon.

Down 9-2 early, Towson attempted to rally with a four-run sixth inning, including RBI hits in that frame by Nick Brown, Zach Piazza and Brad Powers.  But GW held the lead the rest of the game, including three runs in the seventh to hold off Towson's comeback attempt.

Key Stats:
  • This was Towson's top offensive performance of the season with eight runs scored and 14 base hits.  Nick Brown went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Noah Cabrera earned a pair of doubles and two runs in a 2-for-5 day while Zach Piazza was 2-for-4 with two runs brought in.  Brad Powers and Jack Rotteveel each had a pair of hits.
  • Dallas Repine got the loss in his start, going 1.2 innings with five runs, only three earned.  Jake Pecilunas, Joe Enea, David Tiskevics and Matt Watters had scoreless outings from the bullpen.
  • For GW, two players hit three-run home runs: Dom D'Alessandro was 2-for-4 with a run and five RBI while Cade Fergus scored three times and brought in four in a 3-for-5 afternoon.  Starter Rich Pfluger received the victory, going three innings with one run and four strikeouts.
How it Happened:
  • Towson filled the bases in the top of the first with back-to-back-to-back singles with one away but could not score.  The following half-inning, GW got runs off a throwing error to first by the pitcher and a sacrifice fly to lead 2-0.
  • Towson got a run back in the next inning as Noah Cabrera flew a double to left and took third on a wild pitch.  On a ball four to Javon Fields, the pitch got away from the catcher.  Cabrera broke and took home to score, then Fields went to second on the throw home.  Towson got the run to cut the deficit to one at 2-1.
  • Despite an inning opening strikeout from Dallas Repine (0-2), GW got three runs in the bottom of the second, including two RBI extra-base hits, to go up 5-1.
  • In the top of the fourth, Nick Brown came up to pinch hit with a man on second.  He lined a ball to center for his first collegiate base hit, bringing in Jack Rotteveel and making the score 5-2 GW.
  • The bottom half of the fourth saw the home team score four runs, including a three-run home run by Dom D'Alessandro, to lead 9-2.
  • Brown had another RBI single in the top of the sixth to bring in Cabrera from second.  Later with two outs, Towson rallied with a line drive single by Zach Piazza to bring in a pair of runs, then next batter, Brad Powers sent a bullet into center field for an RBI single.  Towson scored four runs in the inning to make it 9-6 GW.  Towson held in the next inning thanks to a couple of strong defensive plays by Colin Conroy at short, a hard ground ball for a double play then a laser line drive right to him for a catch.
  • After the seventh-inning stretch, Cade Fergus hit a two-out, three-run home run to left-center to rebuild GW's lead to 12-6.
  • Towson looked to rally in the top of the eighth inning, with Trent Gast-Woodard drawing a two-out walk with the bases loaded to bring in a run.  GW also got a run in the bottom of the eighth to get its lead back to six at 13-7.
  • Towson's final gasp came in the ninth as the team picked up an RBI on a ground out, but it was not enough.  GW took the victory 13-8.
