Richardson Named CAA Coach of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. – Announced by the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) on Tuesday, head coach Diane Richardson of the Towson University women's basketball team is the CAA Coach of the Year.

This honor comes on the heels of Richardson leading her team to one of the best turnarounds in the nation. In her first season the Tigers won nine games, with 17 wins in her second year the team has almost doubled the victories. Towson had the first winning mark since the 2011-12 season, the most wins since 2008-09 and finished tied for third in the conference, the highest finish since joining the CAA.

Richardson coached her team to a sweep of three CAA teams, an 8-4 record at home and big nonconference wins over UMass, UMBC, Marshall and Saint Joseph's. After being voted to finish eighth in the league the Tigers took possession of first place at one point in the season and spent several weeks leading the conference in scoring.

Also receiving postseason honors are redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter, junior Nukiya Mayo and freshman Janeen Camp.

Jeter was named to the All-CAA First Team and CAA All-Defensive Team. Towson's leading scorer finished the regular season with an average of 17.3 points per game. In the middle of nonconference action the Spartanburg, South Carolina native was in the nation's top-10 scorers. Jeter scored a season-high 32 points against LaSalle, the fourth-most points scored by a CAA player this year. The sophomore led the conference in steals all year and finished the regular season with 73.

This season Jeter received three CAA weekly awards and was named the NewDay USA Student-Athlete of the Week on TowsonTigers.com twice. She has entered the record books in single season points (503), field goals made (189), three-point field goals attempted (172) and three-point field goals made (52).

Mayo lands on the All-CAA Second Team and CAA All-Defensive Team. This is her third all-conference honor after being named to the Third Team last season and entering the season as a Preseason Second Team selection. Mayo was the team's second leading scorer, averaging 14.3 points per game. She led the team in rebounds all season, averaging 7.6 per game. In conference stats she is in the top-10 in rebounds, points, free throw percentage and blocked shots. With 44 blocked shots on the season she is tied for 10th in single season blocks.

Freshman Janeen Camp had a stellar rookie year, scoring 183 points to lead all freshmen on the team, and is named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. Camp was named Rookie of the Week for February 18 after she scored a career-high 18 points against Charleston. Her 1.9 blocks per game landed her in the Towson single season top-10 for blocks, she is seventh with 51 on the year. Her career-high six blocks at Marshall on Dec. 22, 2018 are the fourth most by a CAA player this year. She is second in the league in blocks behind Defensive Player of the Year Kayla Cooper-Williams.

The six postseason awards are the most Towson women's basketball has seen. Previously the most postseason awards were five in the East Coast Conference in the 1984-85 season. Richardson is Towson's second Coach of the Year recipient, the first since joining the CAA. In 1995 and 1998 Ellen Fitzkee received the honor both years.

Richardson and her squad will be in action on Thursday against No. 5 seeded Delaware at 2:30 p.m.
