Hat Tricks Lead Women’s Lacrosse Surge Past Saint Joseph’s

TOWSON, Md. -- Three players with hat tricks led the way for the Towson University women's lacrosse team as the Tigers collected their first win of the season, surging past visiting Saint Joseph's 17-9 Wednesday night at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

The 17-goal outburst was the most goals scored by the Tigers (1-6) this season as Towson added seven assists to the day, also a season-best. Kerri Liucci, Kaitlin Thornton and Rayna Deltuva all chipped in three goals. Molly Lynch and Kerri Thornton led the Tigers with two helpers apiece.

Saint Joseph's (3-4) was paced by three goals from Stephanie Kelly while Hayley Sabol and Bridget Cerciello had two goals each. Francesca Donato led the game with three assists.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as Kaitlin Thornton and Deltuva scored in the first minute of the game. The former converted a free position shot while the latter was assisted by Kerri Thornton.
  • The Hawks got on the board with 21:58 to go in the first half on a goal from Sophia Kolkka with Donato on the back end.
  • The Tigers got back-to-back goals from Deltuva and Kerri Thornton to increase the advantage to 5-1.
  • Down by four, Saint Joseph's fought back and scored three-straight to make it a one-goal, 5-4 affair. Cerciello, Sabol and Olivia all scored in a three-minute span.
  • Deltuva got her first hat trick since March 1 with a marker at the midway point of the first half on a feed from Lynch. Cerciello pulled Saint Joseph's back within one but Liucci logged a free position shot to regain a two-goal lead.
  • Once again the Hawks pulled within one at 11:58 as Kelly scored on a feed from Donato.
  • Towson pulled away late in the first half as the Tiger reeled off three goals in the final 12 minutes from Annie Sachs, Liucci and Kerri Thornton, who scored with nine seconds left in the period for a 10-6 Towson lead at the break.
  • The Tigers continued the run into the second half, scoring the first two markers from Kaitlin Thornton and Lynch at 26:15 and 22:47, respectively. Saint Joseph's halted the run at five as Kelly got her second of the evening.
  • Towson ripped off another three-straight goals, including back-to-back efforts from Natalie Sulmonte and the third from a Liucci free position to increase the lead to 15-7.
  • Both sides traded blows in the final nine minutes of the game. Kelly completed the hat trick at 8:21, followed by a Sarah Rhoads' first career goal at 2:46 of the second. Sabol got the Hawks' final tally at 2:20 before Julia Porter also got her first career strike with 40 seconds to play on a free position.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson out-shot the Hawks 36-25, including 22 in the first half. The Tiger defense limited Saint Joseph's to eight shots in the final 30 minutes.
  • Both teams made 10 saves. Kiley Keating made all 10 saves for the Tigers before she was spelled for the final 2:20 by Annie Shipley.
  • Saint Joseph's split time between Amber Weedon, who made one save and allowed seven goals, and Corinne Buttner, who stopped nine shots and allowed 10 goals.
  • The Hawks had 25 turnovers, 16 of which were caused by Tiger defenders. Olivia Conti led the game with seven forced turnovers as Sami Chenoweth had a trio herself.
  • Towson went 6-for-9 in free position shots. Liucci scored on both of her attempts while Lynch, Sachs and Kaitlin Thornton all scored on their single efforts.
  • Wednesday's win was the first time this season the Tigers held an opponent below 10 goals. Nine different Tigers scored as well.
  • Towson led the action in the circle as well, coming away with 14 of the 27 draw controls. Abby Wilkinson led Towson with four while Erin Williams contributed three. Saint Joseph's Penny Green led the game with six.
Up Next for Towson
  • Towson is idle for a week before heading to North Carolina during the University's spring break.
  • The Tigers take on High Point University on Wednesday, March 20 in a 6 p.m. game at Vert Stadium.
  • High Point (4-3) is in action this weekend for a neutral-site contest at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland. The Panthers will take on Towson's conference foe, Hofstra at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
