NEWARK, Del. – Thursday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team defeated fifth seeded Delaware 59-49 in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship.
The Tigers were led by redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while
Q. Murray posted 13. Tomorrow at 1 p.m. Towson will play No. 9 seed Hofstra in the semifinals, it will be the first semifinal appearance for the Tigers since the 2007-08 season.
How it Happened
- In a game that Towson led throughout, the Tigers scored the first points of the game on a layup from Kionna Jeter.
- The first quarter was low-scoring and back and forth with Delaware tying the game three times. At the end of the first Towson led by four with four points from Q. Murray.
- Led by six points from Jeter, the Tigers opened a 12-0 run in the second period, taking a 21-9 lead with seven minutes left in the half.
- The Blue Hens scored six points in the next three minutes, cutting the lead to seven with 4:30 left in the second. Layups from Jeter and Nukiya Mayo held a nine-point lead at the two-minute mark. Neither team scored again from 1:22 until there were 18 seconds left in the quarter.
- A Jasmine Dickey layup cut the lead to six entering the halftime. Towson led 28-22 at the half.
- Entering the second half, Jeter had a steal and layup, pushing the Tigers to an eight-point lead. She scored the next eight Towson points in the third quarter.
- Delaware cut the lead to one point with 2:11 left in the period on a free throw from Samone DeFreese. Two straight layups from Murray extended the lead to five with 49 seconds to go.
- Entering the fourth the Tigers led by nine following a bucket by Nukiya Mayo at the buzzer.
- Jeter once again scored the opening point of the quarter, 12 seconds into the fourth. Towson led by 11.
- The Blue Hens fought back, cutting the lead to five with 5:29 to go. Neither team scored for the next two minutes until Jeter went to the line and made one free throw with 3:30 to go.
- A Delaware foul shot cut the lead to five again, followed by a jumper from DeFreese, down by three with 1:11 left. DeFreese went to the line and made one free throw to trail by two.
- On the next possession Murray hit a jumper to push the lead to four before Mayo made two free throws to take a six-point lead with 27 seconds remaining.
- Four made free throws from Jeter and Murray sealed the win as the Blue Hens did not score again.
Inside the Numbers
- This is Towson's 13th win of the year being led by Kionna Jeter. She has led the Tigers in scoring in 20 games this season.
- Jeter's 30 points are the most she has scored since her 32-point performance against La Salle in November.
- This is Jeter's second double-double in two weeks, her last night with double points and rebounds was March 3, against James Madison. This is the seventh game she has had with 10 or more made field goals.
- With 13 points this is Q. Murray's ninth game in double figures. The guard leads the team in assists and recorded three against the Blue Hens.
- This was Towson's first game with 50 or more rebounds since hosting the College of Charleston on February 17th.
